Job Title: Project Engineer – Nuclear Engineering
Job Description
This role provides technical leadership and project engineering support for nuclear projects, with a focus on tooling, robotics, and mechanical systems for major refurbishment programs. The Project Engineer guides multidisciplinary engineering teams, ensures nuclear engineering deliverables meet regulatory and quality requirements, and supports complex projects such as Calandria and Fuel Channel installation. The position combines hands-on technical oversight, project coordination, and close collaboration with engineering, project management, and client stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical oversight and guidance to Design Leads and discipline engineers in the development of nuclear engineering deliverables.
- Serve as a key technical interface with client engineering representatives, supporting the identification, resolution, and closure of technical issues.
- Monitor engineering scope, schedule, and budget performance across assigned projects, collaborating with discipline managers to address resourcing, quality, or performance risks.
- Review and approve final technical documents prior to client submission in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) requirements.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of technical procedures, engineering standards, and compliance programs applicable to nuclear projects.
- Support the review of client technical specifications and contribute to proposal development in collaboration with Engineering and Project Management teams.
- Proactively identify emerging technical risks, initiate corrective actions, and support structured problem‑solving efforts on complex or high‑impact issues.
- Ensure engineering milestones and deliverables are achieved in accordance with approved project schedules.
- Communicate risks, constraints, or potential delays to Project Management and relevant stakeholders in a timely and transparent manner.
- Coordinate engineering activities with project controls, procurement, construction, and commissioning teams to support integrated project execution.
- Ensure all engineering work complies with nuclear safety, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements.
- Promote strong cross‑functional collaboration between engineering disciplines, project teams, clients, and external partners.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, quality, and consistency across nuclear projects.
- Act as a positive ambassador for the organization by maintaining high ethical standards and supporting client relationships built on trust and accountability.
- Prepare and support engineering documentation that aligns with project management needs as well as technical engineering requirements.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to develop and refine technical documentation and ensure alignment between project managers and technical teams.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as required to support successful project delivery.
Essential Skills
- Professional Engineer designation, with eligibility to review and approve technical documents in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) requirements.
- Mechanical engineering background with experience in project engineering and mechanical design.
- Nuclear industry experience, including a minimum of 2 years of experience within nuclear projects.
- Experience producing and managing engineering documentation in support of both project management and technical engineering teams.
- Demonstrated experience in project coordination and project management within an engineering environment.
- Strong understanding of nuclear safety, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to monitor engineering scope, schedule, and budget and to address risks related to resourcing, quality, and performance.
- Proven capability to act as a technical interface with client engineering representatives and internal stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical risks, constraints, and issues to project teams and clients.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams and supporting cross‑functional collaboration.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Mechanical Engineering Technologist experience, particularly in tooling, is considered a strong asset.
- Experience with robotics or tooling technology in a nuclear or highly regulated environment.
- Hands‑on experience supporting large‑scale refurbishment projects, such as Calandria installation and Fuel Channel installation.
- Exposure to design engineering activities related to mechanical systems and tooling.
- Demonstrated involvement in continuous improvement initiatives for engineering procedures, standards, or compliance programs.
- Ability to support proposal development through review of client technical specifications and input into engineering scope and approach.
- Strong problem‑solving skills with experience managing complex or high‑impact technical issues.
- Comfortable working closely with subject matter experts and senior engineering leaders to develop and refine technical solutions.
Work Environment
The role is based primarily at a modern engineering facility in Cambridge, where the Project Engineer works onsite three to four days per week. The position supports nuclear refurbishment projects, including work related to Calandria installation and Fuel Channel installation, and involves close collaboration with an engineering team dedicated to these projects. The Project Engineer reports into the engineering leadership structure and works closely with subject matter experts, project managers, and other technical specialists to support technical documentation and project execution. The environment is highly collaborative and project‑driven, with a strong emphasis on nuclear safety, quality assurance, and adherence to regulatory standards. Work is performed in a professional office and engineering setting, using standard engineering tools and documentation systems, and involves regular coordination meetings and structured communication with internal teams and client representatives.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Cambridge, ON.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $70.00 - $80.00/hr.
