Job Title: Stress Analyst

Job Description

This role focuses on performing advanced stress analysis and finite element modeling to support the development of feeder systems for a state-of-the-art nuclear reactor project. The engineer works in 1–4 month analysis cycles, spending extended periods building, refining, and running complex models on computer clusters to achieve converged, stable solutions. The position requires extensive documentation, including the preparation of detailed stress reports that explain loadings, stress distributions, margins, and compliance with applicable codes. The engineer operates with a high degree of independence, devising new approaches to complex engineering problems and contributing directly to the safety and reliability of critical nuclear systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed stress analysis of feeder systems and related components in support of new nuclear reactor development.
  • Build, refine, and modify finite element models over multi-week periods to achieve convergence and stable solutions.
  • Run static structural, dynamic, linear, and non-linear finite element analyses (FEA) using tools such as ANSYS and other advanced solvers.
  • Conduct both implicit and explicit analyses to evaluate component performance under a range of operating and transient conditions.
  • Utilize computer clusters to execute large, complex simulations that may require several days of runtime, monitoring progress and adjusting parameters as needed.
  • Iteratively adjust model parameters and boundary conditions to ensure numerical stability, convergence, and accuracy of results.
  • Interpret analysis results to identify stress distributions, critical locations, and areas exceeding or approaching allowable margins.
  • Prepare comprehensive stress reports, typically ranging from 200 to 600 pages, documenting methodologies, assumptions, load cases, results, and conclusions.
  • Document and justify why specific loadings and stress results are acceptable, including explanations for areas that exceed margins and how they remain compliant.
  • Develop clear illustrations, plots, and figures to show stress distributions, critical regions, and comparative results across different load cases.
  • Provide conclusions and validations that demonstrate compliance with relevant engineering codes and standards.
  • Contribute to requirements definition and design documentation, ensuring that analytical findings are accurately reflected in design records.
  • Plan and conduct work independently, managing tasks and timelines within 1–4 month analysis blocks.
  • Devise new approaches to complex engineering problems within the stress analysis and structural mechanics domain.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineers and technical experts, to support reactor and feeder system design.
  • Leverage large archives of technical documentation and prior project records to inform analysis approaches and validate assumptions.
  • Participate in technical discussions, reviews, and knowledge-sharing sessions to support continuous improvement and knowledge transfer.
  • Support complex feeder analysis tasks that are particularly relevant to professionals with nuclear industry experience.
  • Ensure all work products meet internal quality standards and align with applicable nuclear industry requirements and best practices.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in stress analysis and structural analysis for complex mechanical or nuclear systems.
  • Hands-on experience with finite element analysis (FEA), including static structural, dynamic, linear, and non-linear analyses.
  • Proficiency using ANSYS or comparable FEA software to build, run, and post-process detailed models.
  • Experience with implicit and explicit analysis techniques for evaluating structural response.
  • with strong understanding of mechanics of materials, structural mechanics, and design principles.
  • Proficiency in Matlab or Excel for data analysis, post-processing, and visualization of simulation results.
  • Experience in requirements definition and design documentation within an engineering environment.
  • Experience working with and interpreting relevant engineering codes and standards in a highly regulated environment.
  • Ability to independently plan, execute, and document complex engineering assignments.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including the ability to produce detailed, structured stress reports and technical documentation.
  • Capability to devise new approaches to engineering problems and adapt analysis methods to novel design challenges.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with nuclear industry projects, particularly involving reactor components or feeder systems.
  • Familiarity with LS-DYNA or similar advanced solvers for explicit and dynamic analyses.
  • Exposure to nuclear-specific codes and practices, including code-based validation of stress analysis results.
  • Prior experience working on large, multi-phase engineering projects with long analysis cycles.
  • Comfort working with large datasets and long-running simulations on computer clusters.
  • Interest in working within a highly technical environment alongside subject matter experts and industry leaders.
  • Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and a methodical approach to problem-solving and documentation.
  • Motivation to continuously develop knowledge and expertise through available training, documentation, and technical communities.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily in an office environment, with a preference for working from a facility located in Mississauga. The position follows a standard 37.5-hour work week, with an expectation of working on-site three days per week and collaborating in close proximity to other engineers and technical staff.
