Job Title: Project Manager Capital Projects (Hatchery & Food Production) - WETASKIWIN, AB

Job Description

This role leads the planning, design, execution, and closeout of capital projects within a hatchery and food production environment. The Project Manager oversees initiatives from concept through commissioning, coordinating stakeholders, contractors, engineering partners, and operations teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. The position focuses on industrial capital projects in processing environments and requires strong technical, commercial, and stakeholder management capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage capital projects through the full project lifecycle, from initial scope development and conceptual planning through detailed design, construction, commissioning, turnover, and closeout.
  • Develop clear and comprehensive project scopes, budgets, schedules, and capital expenditure requests (CERs) that align with organizational objectives and approval processes.
  • Coordinate engineering design activities, ensuring that design deliverables meet constructability, operational, safety, and quality requirements.
  • Lead the development of requests for proposals (RFPs), oversee contractor and vendor selection, and manage procurement activities to secure appropriate resources and services.
  • Establish and maintain robust project controls, including cost tracking, schedule management, forecasting, risk identification and mitigation, and regular status reporting.
  • Collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, engineering teams, and external vendors to align project execution with facility needs and production requirements.
  • Support and oversee construction activities, including field coordination, site issue resolution, and integration of construction work with ongoing operations.
  • Lead commissioning and startup efforts to ensure new or upgraded systems and facilities meet performance expectations and can be handed over smoothly to operations.
  • Ensure all project documentation, reporting, and deliverables comply with established project management processes, standards, and governance requirements.
  • Monitor contractor performance and verify that work is completed in accordance with the approved scope, schedule, budget, quality standards, and safety requirements.
  • Review engineering drawings and technical documents to assess constructability, identify schedule impacts, and evaluate project risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate multiple project phases and concurrent activities, managing cross-functional stakeholders and maintaining alignment across design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience managing industrial capital projects, preferably in complex processing or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to lead projects from concept through commissioning and closeout.
  • Solid understanding of engineering design principles, construction management practices, and project controls methodologies.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage project scopes, budgets, schedules, and capital expenditure requests (CERs).
  • Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation to evaluate constructability, schedule implications, and project risks.
  • Experience managing multiple project phases and coordinating cross-functional stakeholders, including operations, maintenance, engineering, and vendors.
  • Familiarity with budgets, cost forecasting, and capital approval processes within an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to effectively engage internal teams and external partners.
  • Ability to monitor contractor performance and ensure adherence to scope, safety, quality, and schedule requirements.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in food and beverage, agriculture, manufacturing, or other industrial processing environments.
  • Previous experience in hatchery, poultry, food processing, agricultural, or manufacturing facility projects.
  • Experience delivering brownfield capital upgrades and facility expansion projects in operating plants.
  • Exposure to multi-phase capital programs involving concurrent design and execution activities.
  • Experience working in hybrid arrangements that combine remote coordination with regular site presence.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for managing project risks and resolving field issues.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and project demands across planning, construction, and commissioning phases.

Work Environment

This is a hybrid role that combines remote work with regular on-site presence at hatchery and food production facilities in Alberta. The Project Manager works both from an office or home-based setting for planning, coordination, and reporting, and at project sites for construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
