Job Description
This Intermediate Mechanical / Structural Engineer role focuses on the design and execution of oil and gas processing equipment and facilities. You will work closely with senior engineers to perform detailed design and analysis of equipment, piping, structures, and foundations, while coordinating small to mid-size projects from concept through execution. The position offers a hands-on scope with growing ownership, where you manage portions of projects, contribute strong technical input, and provide support to junior team members in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical and structural design and analysis for equipment, piping, foundations, and supporting structures in oil and gas processing and heavy oil facilities.
- Conduct stress and finite element analysis (FEA), including evaluation of thermal, vibration, and impact load cases to ensure safe and reliable designs.
- Review and interpret codes and standards such as ASME, CSA, API, and applicable building codes, and apply them effectively in design work.
- Coordinate small to mid-size projects, managing assigned scopes, schedules, and deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
- Respond to requests for information (RFIs) from the field and fabrication shops, providing timely technical clarifications and solutions.
- Participate in 3D model reviews to verify layout, constructability, and interfaces, and support P&ID reviews and HAZOPs to identify and mitigate risks.
- Support field and construction activities by performing site visits, inspections, and troubleshooting of technical issues during installation and commissioning.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer ( registration with APEGA or eligibility for registration.
- Hands-on experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and stress analysis, including thermal, vibration, and impact load cases.
- Practical experience interpreting and applying ASME, CSA, API, and relevant building codes in design work.
- Experience reviewing engineering drawings, fabrication packages, and responding to RFIs.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling reviews and participation in P&ID reviews and HAZOPs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with engineering tools such as ANSYS, Creo, FE/Pipe, SAP2000, ETABS, or STAAD Pro.
- Familiarity with Python or other scripting tools to support engineering analysis and automation.
- Experience supporting field and construction activities, including troubleshooting onsite issues and providing technical resolutions.
Work Environment
This role operates within an engineering environment focused on oil and gas processing and heavy oil facilities, combining office-based design work with exposure to field and fabrication settings. You can expect periodic visits to fabrication shops and project sites for inspections, RFIs, and troubleshooting. The role is offered as a 6-month contract-to-hire opportunity.
