Job Title: Flexographic Press OperatorJob DescriptionThis role involves setting up, operating, and changing over flexographic printing presses to produce high-quality printed materials. You will work with press equipment, materials, and inks, monitor print quality throughout production, and perform routine cleaning and troubleshooting to minimize downtime. The position requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work effectively within a team-oriented, unionized environment across multiple shifts.
Responsibilities
- Set up and change over press equipment, including installing and removing cylinders, anilox rollers, sleeves, and die-cutters, and preparing the robotic take-off system.
- Handle materials by loading large paperboard rolls onto the press and ensuring they are properly aligned and secured.
- Dispense ink formulas, mix and adjust inks as required, and use color-matching software to achieve accurate and consistent colors.
- Monitor print registration, color consistency, and overall print quality during production runs, making necessary adjustments to maintain specifications.
- Identify and correct printing issues such as misregistration, color variation, and print defects to reduce waste and maintain efficiency.
- Perform routine cleaning of trays, rollers, and related press components to ensure smooth and reliable operation.
- Replace wear components such as doctor blades and print heads as needed to maintain optimal press performance.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and process issues on the press and associated equipment to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules.
- Document production and quality information accurately, including run parameters, materials used, and any adjustments made during the job.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with workplace safety standards and company procedures.
- Learn and apply new procedures, equipment updates, and best practices as processes evolve.
- Collaborate with pre-press staff and other machine operators to coordinate setups, resolve issues, and ensure smooth workflow across shifts.
Essential Skills- Minimum 2 years of experience in flexographic printing, printing press operation, or die-cutting.
- Hands-on experience operating flexographic presses or similar printing equipment.
- Knowledge of die-cutting processes and related equipment.
- Ability to use color-matching software and adjust ink formulas to achieve required color standards.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for setting up, adjusting, and maintaining press components such as cylinders, anilox rollers, sleeves, and doctor blades.
- Ability to perform basic math calculations and measurements, including reading measurements accurately and applying them to press setup.
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining consistent print quality throughout production.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Capability to document production and quality data clearly and accurately.
- Willingness and ability to work afternoon, day, and night shifts as required in a rotating or multi-shift environment.
- Effective teamwork and communication skills to work closely with pre-press staff and other machine operators.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Previous experience working in a unionized manufacturing or printing environment.
- Familiarity with robotic take-off systems or automated material handling equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting printing defects and mechanical issues on high-speed presses.
- Comfort working with large paperboard rolls and other heavy materials using appropriate handling methods.
- Openness to continuous learning and adopting new procedures, technologies, and best practices.

Work Environment
The role is based in a unionized production facility represented by a steelworkers union, working closely with a team of approximately 10–12 colleagues, including pre-press staff and machine operators. You operate flexographic printing presses, die-cutting equipment, anilox rollers, cylinders, sleeves, and robotic take-off systems, as well as ink dispensing and color-matching software. The environment is fast-paced and production-focused, with an emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and adherence to established procedures. The primary shift focus is the afternoon shift from 3:00 . to 11:00 ., but you are expected to be open to working all shifts, including days (7:00 . to 3:00 and nights (11:00 . to 7:00 . Premiums apply to afternoon and night shifts. You work on the production floor around machinery, inks, and paperboard materials, following appropriate safety practices and attire suitable for an industrial printing environment.
