Job description

At eBay, we're more than a global ecommerce leader — we’re changing the way the world shops and sells. Our platform empowers millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets around the world. We’re committed to pushing boundaries and leaving our mark as we reinvent the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts.

Our customers are our compass, authenticity thrives, bold ideas are welcome, and everyone can bring their unique selves to work — every day. We're in this together, sustaining the future of our customers, our company, and our planet.

Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers — and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.

Looking for a company that encourages passion, courage and imagination, where you can be part of the team shaping the future of global commerce? Want to craft how millions of people buy, sell, connect, and share around the world? If you’re interested in joining a purpose-driven community that is dedicated to creating an ambitious and inclusive workplace, join eBay – a company you can be proud to be a part of.

If you are up for the challenge to build new and cutting-edge large-scale internet web services and applications used by millions of business sellers around the globe every day—and drive critical, meaningful, and impactful changes to one of the world's largest internet properties—then join us on the Core Inventory & Listing Experience team.

We are seeking a talented, creative, and passionate MTS 1 Backend Software Engineer (level can be adjusted based on candidate’s skills and experience) to architect, design, and develop innovative, highly performant, and available software in the form of web services and applications across various device form factors. These solutions will help business sellers worldwide onboard, manage inventory and listings, and grow their businesses on the largest global marketplace.

What You Will Accomplish

  • Deliver highly scalable, reliable backend systems powering eBay’s global selling experience used by 25M+ sellers

  • Drive improvements in performance, scalability, and accuracy at the very top of eBay’s commerce funnel

  • Enable seamless onboarding, inventory management, and listing experiences for business sellers worldwide

  • Build and evolve distributed, fault-tolerant systems across data centers that directly support billions of dollars in quarterly revenue

  • Own and deliver major features end-to-end—from architecture and design through development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support

  • Influence architectural decisions, contribute to system design discussions, and help shape the technical direction of core platform services

  • Identify technical risks, plan implementations, and lead execution to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions

  • You will contribute at the very core of eBay’s selling experience, delivering an engaging platform for more than 25 million sellers across 22 countries.

  • Performance, reliability, scalability, and accuracy are critical, as this area sits at the top of the funnel for eBay’s global e-commerce ecosystem.

What You Will Bring

  • BS in EE/CS or equivalent experience; 8+ years building highly scalable distributed systems (or Master’s with 6+ years, or PhD with 4+ years)

  • Strong expertise in Java and/or Scala, with solid foundations in data structures, algorithms, and concurrent programming

  • Deep understanding of system design and ability to lead projects through to completion

  • Experience with REST/SOAP services, design patterns, OOA/D, and internet-scale applications

  • Hands-on experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (Oracle, MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase), and search technologies like Elasticsearch

  • Familiarity with applying AI tools for code generation, automated testing, or intelligent system development

  • Strong collaboration and influencing skills across cross-functional and global teams

  • Experience driving architecture discussions, producing design documentation, and contributing to code reviews and testing

  • Solid understanding of performance, scalability, security, and modern web technologies

  • Creativity, curiosity, and a passion for continuous innovation

  • Strong ownership mindset and drive for results

  • Ability to learn quickly, think big, and execute effectively

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

  • A desire to build impactful solutions while having fun along the way
