Job description

Responsibilities

:
  • Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical, digital, analogue, wireless, computerized and other equipment required to perform field work and land surveys as part of a field crew.
  • Collects, maintains and analyzes Engineering Survey and infrastructure data, prepares reports making recommendations to the party chief and/or supervisor, as required.
  • Prepares and edits technical information including point and control codes for the collection and attribution of data to create points, lines and polygons in the CADD environment.
  • Transforms information by searching and analyzing designs, reports, specifications and other documentation related to projects.
  • Maintains and updates data including Indexing, filing and referencing engineering survey records. Calculates, checks manual and computerized calculations and survey measurements (e.g. control points, grades, closures, profiles, resections and traverses).
  • Prepares preliminary sketches and interprets working drawings and layout notes.
  • Collects, downloads and reviews preliminary data using CADD.
  • Prepares and checks CADD base plan drawings related to the design and construction of municipal infrastructures such as roads, sewers, watermains and utilities utilizing geospatial and mapping information systems from various digital and hardcopy sources.
  • Investigates, researches and conducts studies. Collects and analyzes data and prepares reports. Responds to complaints and inquiries.
  • Assists the ETT1 by supporting the planning, design, construction and inspection of municipal infrastructure projects, and ensures they are carried out in accordance with City Engineering Survey Standards, specifications and procedures.
  • Attends on site meetings with contractors, utility companies, etc. regarding construction and repairs on capital projects.
  • Monitors, for environmental conditions, i.e. landfill gases and water quality.
  • Procures goods and/or services to ensure adequate stock of consumable supplies.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Graduate in Surveying, Geomatics, or Civil Engineering Technology or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in survey work, such as field/office experience with an engineering or a cadastral survey field crew.
  • Experience in operating survey field equipment such as total stations, data collectors, levels, GNSS, or processing survey data.
  • Experience in using automated office technology (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Must possess a Driver's License, Class "G" or better, valid in the Province of Ontario and be able to maintain same. Ability to obtain and maintain a City of Toronto "Operator's Permit."

Youmust also have:

  • Knowledge of engineering surveying and of the principles of engineering technologies.
  • Ability to operate survey field equipment, personal computer, total stations, data collectors, global positioning systems, levels, electronic measuring devices, levelling rod, plum bob and measuring tape.
  • Ability to perform manual and computerized mathematical calculations used in engineering surveys.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate field notes.
  • Understanding of CADD principles.
  • Physical ability to drive stakes, lift maintenance hole covers, carry equipment and supplies and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering technical drawings and plans.
  • Ability to answer questions from the public and converse technically with engineering staff and other technical representatives.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with the public, consultants, engineering staff and other representatives.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations, statutes, standards and practices.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, traffic and construction sites (including working in a confined space environment).
  • Problem solving, project co-ordination skills and the ability to exercise independent judgement in dealing with technical matters.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Available to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends for projects.
  • Ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity and respectful workplaces.
