Job description
Position Summary

As a member of an interprofessional team, the Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department (ED) provides patient-centered nursing care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. Practicing in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario standards, Hospital policies, and Patient Care Services guidelines, the RN delivers safe, compassionate, and evidence-informed care throughout the Emergency Department. The RN demonstrates clinical leadership, advanced critical thinking, and accountability while supporting timely assessment, treatment, patient flow, and safe transitions of care within the Emergency Department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meets the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and practices in accordance with Hospital and Patient Care Services policies and procedures.
  • Assesses patient needs and develops, implements, and evaluates individualized plans of nursing care for patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Applies evidence-based practice and advanced clinical judgment to coordinate patient care activities and identify appropriate resources and supports.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to assess changes in patient status (complexity, stability), and initiates consultation, escalation, or transfer of care as required.
  • Provides direct nursing care across a range of acuity levels, including minor treatment areas, resuscitation, and critical care situations as required.
  • Monitors patient care, workflow processes, and outcomes and participates in quality improvement initiatives to optimize care delivery.
  • Assumes responsibility for patient safety and contributes to a culture of safety.
  • Utilizes human and material resources effectively and responsibly.
  • Functions in accordance with established hospital emergency procedures.
  • Provides leadership and support to team members and performs the Charge Nurse role when assigned.
  • Participates in the orientation, mentorship and support of new team members and nursing students, including preceptorship activities as assigned.
  • Works collaboratively with external education partners to facilitate student learning experiences.
  • Maintains professional competence through ongoing learning, participation in education sessions and in-services, and self-assessment of professional development needs.
  • Maintains awareness of current developments in nursing practice and relevant legislation, including the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Participates as a member of the interprofessional team, promoting effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, physicians, healthcare team members, and community agencies.
  • Supports patient and family education, health promotion, and referrals to appropriate community resources.
  • Assists in maintaining established standards of care through individual performance, participation in hospital committees, and engagement in performance improvement and patient flow initiatives.
  • May be utilized in other patient care areas during a shift based on patient care needs and operational requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the direct Manager or designate.

Qualifications

Education

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Completion of an approved nursing program BScN or equivalent is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is required. CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider) will be accepted as an equivalent.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required or willingness to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Completion of Coronary Care I certificate is required or willingness to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Completion of QRS OnDemand Rhythm Interpretation course may be considered as an alternative.
  • IV certification or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire. Experience with IV initiation may be considered.
  • Completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC), Trauma Nursing (TNCC), Certified Emergency Care Course, or Certified Canadian Emergency Nursing Certificate is considered an asset.
  • Participation in Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO)/ Emergency Nurses Association of Ontario (ENAO)/ Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) an asset.
  • Minimum two (2) years medical/surgical experience is required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of Emergency Department experience is preferred.
  • Recent graduates who have completed an Emergency Department consolidation or Clinical Externs with recent Emergency Department experience may be considered, including for New Graduate Initiative (NGI) opportunities.

  • Must be able to meet the physical and emotional responsibilities of the role, including standing and walking for extended periods, frequent and repetitive pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as safely operating equipment.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, as outlined in the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA).
  • Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Provides excellent customer service and contributes positively to teamwork and collaborative working relationships.
  • Effectively prioritizes workload, adapts to changing priorities, and remains composed in fast-paced or stressful environments.
  • Works independently with sound judgment, while remaining flexible to meet departmental and organizational needs.

  • Maintains active registration and good standing with the appropriate regulatory college, where applicable.
  • Applies critical thinking and sound clinical judgment to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
  • Follows all clinical protocols, infection prevention and control practices, and safety procedures relevant to the role.
  • Documents care and clinical activities accurately, clearly, and in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
