Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Forestry Maintenance and Operations, this role is responsible for coordinating the planning and delivery of operational and capital forestry programs and projects across streets, parks, and City-owned properties. The Forestry Coordinator plays a key role in protecting, enhancing, restoring, expanding, and connecting Mississauga’s urban forest. This position provides direction to contractors, in house crews, offers functional guidance to team members, and oversees project and/or contract management related to tree maintenance, tree planting, and vegetation management initiatives to ensure safe, sustainable, and high-quality outcomes for the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate planning, procurement, scheduling, and monitoring of contractors, consultants, personnel equipment, and materials for forestry operations and capital projects.
  • Lead all phases of the project lifecycle, including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring/controlling, and closure.
  • Prepare and implement work plans, designs, and studies for tree maintenance, planting, and vegetation management.
  • Conduct inspections and ensure work is completed to corporate and legislative standards.
  • Provide functional guidance and training to team members; serve as backup to the Supervisor when required.
  • Assign work orders to both contractors and in‑house crews to ensure timely and effective service delivery.
  • Respond to service requests and ensure timely follow-up for tree maintenance and when required boulevard vegetation management .
  • Administer full contract lifecycles, including development of specifications, tender preparation, evaluation, award recommendations, execution, monitoring, and closeout.
  • Ensure contractors meet all legislative, policy, and service-level requirements.
  • Oversee contractor quality control and performance against contract specifications.
  • Track expenditures, monitor budgets, and review invoicing to identify variances and discrepancies.
  • Deliver prompt, high-quality customer service in response to inquiries from residents, elected officials, and internal staff.
  • Develop professional correspondence, reports, briefing notes, memoranda, and presentations for leadership.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders, Council offices, external partners, and the community.
  • Represent the Division at public meetings, Council committees, working groups, and inter-departmental teams.
  • Foster and maintain a strong culture of health and safety in accordance with applicable legislation (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • Ensure all work meets legislated, corporate, departmental, and divisional standards.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Urban Forestry, Forestry, Arboriculture, or related field.
  • Mst be an ISA Certified Arborist.
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) considered an asset.
  • ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist; ISA Board Certified Master Arborist considered an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in urban forestry.
  • Experience in tree maintenance, and boulevard vegetation management on municipal infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing contractors and projects, including procurement, budgeting, scheduling, and quality control.
  • Strong understanding of urban forestry, arboriculture, and landscape construction practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to effectively engage with residents, internal staff, and elected officials.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain, and perform heavy lifting.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and municipal policies.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be willing to obtain driver's abstract at your own expense.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if required, and participate in the Forestry On‑Call program.
