The Hospitalist Medicine Division at Island Health currently has an opening for additional Hospitalists. We are a collegial group of about 25 physicians with diverse backgrounds who share a commitment to our team, and place a strong emphasis on work‑life balance.
Our group serves as the Medical Review Panel (MRP) for the majority of patients at Nanaimo General Regional Hospital. We continuously learn from our peers and colleagues, fostering a collaborative and stimulating work environment. We pride ourselves on a supportive setting that encourages stepping up to help one another when needed, making challenging days more manageable and rewarding.
Scheduling offers great flexibility. Shifts are assigned months in advance to allow ample time to plan for you and your family’s needs. Most shifts run weekday hours, but weekend and evening shifts are also built into the schedule. Shifts are generally in block format of 5–7 consecutive days, with single days and shorter blocks also available.
We offer travel and accommodation funding for locum shifts. A robust orientation and computer training program is provided, along with two fully paid training shifts designed to familiarize you with our hospital and system before seeing patients.

Nanaimo, with a population of roughly 90 000, is a growing urban centre on Vancouver Island, located about 100 km north of Victoria. The city provides excellent access via commercial flights, float planes, or ferries to Vancouver. It offers a wide variety of cultural and educational opportunities, including the 800‑seat Port Theatre, Vancouver Island University, and renowned private schools.
Nanaimo is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, offering year‑round access to recreational activities such as kayaking, kite boarding, windsurfing, mountain biking, hiking, running, and golfing. Nearby Mount Washington boasts one of the deepest snow packs in North America, providing excellent downhill, snowboarding, and cross‑country skiing.
