EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION Immediate Supervisor: School Principal1 FTE Hours of Work: 6.25 hours per dayBasic FunctionAn Educational Assistant provides assistance to students who require additional supports. Education planning is done in collaboration with the classroom teacher and other professional members of the school team. Duties and Responsibilities Professional Behaviour Be willing to participate in training, in-services and appropriate courses of study. Be knowledgeable about Board Policies and Administrative Procedures. Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to a Catholic educational institutional that provides services to children. Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, interact empathetically and tactfully with staff, students, parents and the public in a manner that is respectful of Catholic morals and values. Promote an atmosphere of respect for children and adults. Assisting Students Under the direction of the classroom teacher, administrator and/or student support services teacher(SSST), supervise and assist student learning activities focused on identified outcomes. Where appropriate, assist student(s) in the development of problem solving, socialization and peer interaction skills. Provide academic supports, as directed by the principal. Supervise student(s), as requested by the principal. Provide personal assistance to student(s) with physical disabilities which may include toileting, feeding, grooming, dressing, lifting, stretching, etc. Operate, adjust and assist with specialized equipment and assistive technology as required (ex. wheelchairs, life skills equipment, speech or vision technology and programs, computers, etc.). Assist student(s) with gross motor skill programs and activities as outlined in the student(s)’s Inclusion and Intervention Plans, as required. Provide medical care (ex. administering medication, monitoring seizure severity, record keeping, etc.), as required. Assisting TeachersAssist in the development of an Inclusion and Intervention Plan, if requested. Implement behavior modification techniques and assist with general classroom management in accordance with school guidelines. Assist with assessment of student progress by compiling information regarding academic progress, behavior and communication, etc. and recording individual progress (ex. journals and observation sheets), as required. Identify and collect appropriate learning resources, as directed by the teacher. TeamworkMake positive contributions to school initiatives. Work with staff and administration in supporting students. Contribute as a team member to the overall success of academic, social and emotional needs of students. Participate in team meetings regarding student progress as requested. Collaborate and work with volunteers and staff. Participate in other duties and special projects as assigned. Required Qualifications Education A Grade 12 diploma from a provincially recognized institution is required. Educational Assistant course (or equivalent) is preferred. ExperiencePreference for 2 years of related experience, or experience working with children ages Kindergarten to Grade 12 in extra-curricular activities. Technical Requirements Valid Driver’s License and appropriately insured, dependable vehicle, as required. Proficient with technology. Familiarity with technical aids. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation, as required. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating sound judgment and decision making skills to ensure quality of work meets expected standards.
