Job Title: Journeyman Millwright
Job Description
This role supports a full-service multi-trade industrial contractor on a shutdown project at a steel pipe mill in southeast Calgary. You will work as a Journeyman Millwright on critical shutdown activities such as completing a cooling tower, replacing sprockets, modifying equipment, and supporting mechanical and installation work across the facility. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, industrial maintenance experience, and the ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced construction and industrial environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical installation, maintenance, and repair work on industrial equipment within a steel pipe mill environment.
- Support shutdown activities, including completing a cooling tower, replacing sprockets, and modifying equipment as required.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair conveyor systems and other material handling equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to execute installations and repairs accurately.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and industrial equipment safely to assemble, disassemble, and align machinery.
- Carry out preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance tasks on mechanical and industrial systems.
- Assist with equipment installation in warehousing, production, and material handling environments as needed.
- Work collaboratively with forepersons and other trades to plan, coordinate, and complete tasks within project timelines.
- Follow all site safety procedures, including proper use of AWP, fall pro, and forklift equipment, and participate in safety meetings and orientations.
- Operate industrial equipment such as forklifts and aerial work platforms when qualified and required.
- Communicate effectively with team members, provide updates on progress, and escalate issues or hazards promptly.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure tools and equipment are used and stored properly.
- Adapt to changing project needs and support additional tasks related to construction, mechanical, electrical, and general labor work as required.
Essential Skills
- Valid Journeyman Millwright certification.
- Demonstrated maintenance experience in an industrial environment.
- Strong industrial experience, preferably in steel mills, pipe mills, or similar heavy industrial facilities.
- Experience working with conveyors, including troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documentation.
- Valid AWP (aerial work platform) certification.
- Valid fall protection certification.
- Valid forklift ticket and experience operating forklifts.
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to diagnose and repair mechanical issues.
- Experience performing construction, mechanical, installation, and general labor tasks in an industrial setting.
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts, 6 days per week for the duration of the shutdown.
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to take direction and work closely with forepersons and other trades.
- Coachability, openness to constructive feedback, and motivation to develop skills within the trade.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Rigging experience in industrial or field environments.
- Industrial or field work experience beyond plant-based roles.
- Hydraulic systems experience, including troubleshooting and repair.
- Experience repairing and building equipment used in mining and drilling applications.
- Additional conveyor experience, including installation and modification.
- Experience installing material handling equipment in industrial or warehouse settings.
- Experience operating scissor lifts, zoom booms, and sit-down forklifts.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently when required.
- Motivated attitude, excitement to learn new skills, and interest in working on a variety of new projects.
Work Environment
This role is based at a steel pipe mill in southeast Calgary and involves working in a heavy industrial plant environment. You will work 12-hour shifts, 6 days per week, typically over a two-week stretch during shutdown periods. The work involves construction, mechanical, installation, electrical support, and general labor tasks in and around a steel plant, including work on cooling towers, conveyors, and other industrial equipment. You will use and be around equipment such as aerial work platforms, scissor lifts, zoom booms, and sit-down forklifts, and will be expected to follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. The setting is fast-paced, collaborative, and hands-on, with close interaction with forepersons and other trades on site
