Senior Structural Engineer
Location: Burnaby, BC
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Work Arrangement: On-Site Initially, with Potential for Hybrid
MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This role will focus on the assessment, design, rehabilitation, and construction support of structural infrastructure throughout British Columbia.
The successful candidate will bring strong expertise in reinforced concrete, structural steel, and timber structures, along with practical experience supporting construction activities and developing solutions for existing infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural assessments, engineering design, rehabilitation planning, and construction support.
- Serve as Professional of Record (PoR) and develop practical engineering solutions based on field conditions.
- Design and assess reinforced concrete, structural steel, and timber structures.
- Support construction staging, temporary works, excavation support systems, and constructability reviews.
- Conduct field investigations and provide engineering support during construction.
- Perform structural analysis using S-Frame, SAP2000, STAAD, and other industry-standard software.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
- Engage professionally with contractors, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
- Apply applicable codes, standards, permitting requirements, and engineering practices.
- Support quality management, engineering reviews, document control, and records management in accordance with EGBC professional practice requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from a recognized Canadian university.
- Registered P.Eng. (Civil/Structural) in good standing with EGBC.
- Minimum 8 years of structural engineering experience in Canada.
- Strong experience with reinforced concrete, structural steel, and timber design.
- Experience with structural assessment, rehabilitation, and construction support.
- Strong knowledge of construction practices in British Columbia.
- Experience with temporary works, construction staging, excavation support, and constructability reviews.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
- Ability to obtain or use a valid EGBC Permit to Practice as required.
Nice to Have
- Previous experience supporting a Canadian utility owner.
- Structural assessment and rehabilitation of underground utility infrastructure, including maintenance holes, vaults, and duct banks.
- Structural concrete repair and rehabilitation experience.
- Seismic retrofit experience for existing structures.
- Non-destructive testing (NDT) experience involving reinforced concrete.
- Distribution infrastructure experience involving underground and overhead assets.
- Familiarity with MMCD, MoTT Utilities Manual, CoV Utilities Design Manual, and permitting requirements.
- Bridge design experience.
- Asset condition assessment, risk-based prioritization, and rehabilitation planning experience.
