What you’ll do

  • Lead, through hands-on work, mass spectrometry assay development projects and all modifications to existing assays including data interpretation, troubleshooting and optimization of sample preparation and experimental design, quality procedures and assays.
  • Support, train, and provide technical advice and direction to staff using the equipment in all aspects of their routine work and in newly-validated methods.

Supervise and train users in the correct use of the equipment; recommends and oversees modifications to equipment as needed.

Provide expertise in troubleshooting problems that occur during routine operation of the equipment, including tasks such as disassembly, cleaning and replacement of valves, tubing, and sample-loop.

  • Source and choose appropriate reagents for assay development (e.g., chemical, standards, calibrators, internal standards).
  • Develop and optimize method parameters (e.g., compound-optimization experiments, chromatographic condition selection and optimization).
  • Research and develop novel mass spectrometric methods.
  • Stay apprised of new technologies for sample preparation and analysis (e.g., new chromatographic techniques, new automation tools, and new MS approaches).
  • Design, direct, perform, analyze and interpret a wide range of experiments independently.
  • Performs experimental method validation following appropriate guidelines.

What you bring

Qualifications

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a PhD in a relevant discipline such as Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Sciences, Toxicology or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution and five (5) years’ experience working with Mass Spectrometry, Gas chromatography, Liquid Chromatography and varied sample preparation procedures in forensically accredited laboratory that follows good laboratory practice.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of programming languages (including Python, R and Visual Basic) and familiarities with ISO 15189 or 17025 is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate experimental results and provide direction to personnel.
  • Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan : A First Nations Case Study and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have : Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
