- Permanent
MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer for permanent role with a client of ours located in Vancouver.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to architectural direction, establish the foundation for the next generation of the platform, and plan the transition from the existing system.
- Work across the full product ecosystem, including checkout, merchant portal, risk and underwriting engine, loan management, and public APIs.
- Design modular, composable systems with clear contracts and well-defined boundaries, balancing shared abstractions with independent components.
- Ensure correctness across financial transactions, payments, disbursements, and ledger entries, with robust reconciliation, failure handling, retries, and recovery mechanisms.
- Build and maintain third-party integrations across payment processors, banking infrastructure, credit bureaus, and KYC providers, accounting for external API failures and limitations.
- Take ownership of production operations, including troubleshooting, incident response, and ongoing system reliability.
- Develop compliance capabilities as core product functionality, including audit trails, access controls, and reporting to support regulatory requirements.
- Own delivery from architecture through deployment within six-week product cycles, following Shape Up principles and maintaining accountability for outcomes.
- Participate in six-week rotations on, the bug-hunting and continuous improvement team, addressing technical debt, improving system quality, and building knowledge across the platform.
Requirements:
- 4+ years of full-stack software development experience, with a back-end focus and a product-oriented mindset; capable of building focused, functional interfaces without unnecessary complexity.
- Strong TypeScript fundamentals, with experience in other languages such as Go, Python, Java, or C# also valued.
- Deep PostgreSQL experience, including schema evolution, transaction isolation, lock contention, query optimization, and working directly with SQL rather than relying on ORMs.
- Experience building asynchronous and long-running workflows, with a strong understanding of idempotency, retries, partial failures, and out-of-order events. Temporal experience is beneficial but not required.
- Experience developing systems where financial accuracy is critical, such as ledgers, reconciliation, billing, or payments, with a strong focus on correctness and failure scenarios.
- Proven ownership of significant product and technical decisions, including accountability for business outcomes and long-term consequences.
- Practical, daily use of LLMs in software development, with the ability to articulate their benefits, limitations, and appropriate applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders across risk, finance, and customer care.
- Clear technical opinions, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to challenge ideas constructively while balancing technical quality with business needs.
- Ability to work autonomously in a small, collaborative team within a regulated environment, balancing engineering priorities with necessary compliance and operational processes.
- Experience in a consequence-aware industry such as fintech, health tech, insurance, or payments is a strong asset, particularly where software errors have direct implications for customers.
