Job Title: CNC Machinist
Job Description
The CNC Machinist sets up and operates CNC and manual machine tools, including lathes and milling machines, to produce precision components to specified tolerances and dimensions. This role involves interpreting blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches, using a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments, and maintaining accurate documentation. The position requires strong attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks and priorities.
Work Environment
This role is based in a day-shift machining environment operating Monday to Friday, with standard hours of 6:00 . to 2:30 . and flexible options such as 7:00 . to 3:30 . or 8:00 . to 4:30 . as needed. The position is primarily located at a machining facility in Delta, working alongside a team of machinists, with the ability to travel to a Ferndale location if required. Breaks include a 30-minute unpaid period and a 15-minute paid break during the shift. The shop environment involves regular use of CNC and manual lathes, mills, and related equipment, along with precision measuring tools and PC-based systems for email and documentation. Work is hands-on and may require standing for extended periods and lifting components over 50 pounds, with appropriate work boots and practical shop attire expected to ensure safety and comfort.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC and manual lathes, milling machines, and other machine tools to produce components to precise tolerances and dimensions.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches to plan machining operations and ensure accurate part production.
- Use machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and maintain quality standards throughout the machining process.
- Perform both CNC and manual machine setups, including selecting tooling, establishing workholding, and inputting or verifying machine offsets.
- Operate machines with Haas and Fanuc controls, and apply knowledge of these control systems to efficiently run production jobs.
- Follow written procedures, work instructions, and documentation requirements to ensure consistent and repeatable machining results.
- Document work performed, maintain organized records, and communicate issues or deviations clearly and professionally.
- Multitask and prioritize work to meet production schedules and deadlines while maintaining high quality standards.
- Identify machining issues, make confident judgment calls, and propose solutions, including creating simple drawings to explain problems when needed.
- Work with minimal supervision, taking initiative as a self-starter to keep work flowing and address issues proactively.
- Collaborate with other machinists and team members at the primary facility and, when required, support operations at other locations.
- Handle and move materials and components safely, including lifting items over 50 pounds in accordance with shop safety practices.
Essential Skills
- At least 4 years of machining experience, including hands-on work with CNC and manual equipment.
- Proficiency in setting up and operating CNC lathes and milling machines, as well as manual lathes and mills.
- Ability to interpret and work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches accurately.
- Strong knowledge of machining practices, including tooling selection, feeds and speeds, and workholding methods.
- Experience using machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances.
- Knowledge in both CNC and manual setups, including establishing offsets and verifying machine readiness.
- Clear written and spoken English communication skills, with the ability to read, write, and explain instructions in a professional manner.
- Good documentation and organizational skills to maintain accurate records and job travelers.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and follow written procedures consistently.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work effectively, and maintain strong attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills, including email composition and general PC usage.
- Physical ability to lift items over 50 pounds safely as part of regular shop activities.
- Confidence in making judgment calls on the shop floor and taking responsibility for decisions.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision as a reliable self-starter.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Haas and Fanuc controls is an asset.
- Programming experience in Mastercam is an asset.
- Ability to read and create drawings to explain issues or proposed changes.
- Comfort working collaboratively with a team of machinists in a production environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing machining challenges.
