Telecom Design Engineer
Location: Burnaby, BC (Hybrid)
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Travel: Travel within British Columbia may be required
MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Telecom Design Engineer to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced telecommunications engineer to design and deliver telecom solutions supporting complex utility infrastructure projects across the province.
The successful candidate will work as a Telecommunications Senior Engineer, providing engineering design, technical leadership, and project support for a broad range of telecommunications technologies and systems.
Responsibilities
- Design telecommunications solutions for utility infrastructure projects.
- Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables as the Professional of Record (PoR).
- Develop design study reports outlining alternatives, cost estimates, and recommended telecom solutions.
- Prepare technical specifications, design calculations, drawings, permitting documentation, test plans, and commissioning documentation.
- Design telecom infrastructure including IP/MPLS networks, SONET, microwave radio links, fibre optic networks, LTE, DACS, antennas and towers, grounding systems, teleprotection, and related technologies.
- Develop and maintain engineering standards, installation drawings, equipment configurations, material requirements, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate telecom requirements with electrical and other engineering disciplines.
- Prepare bills of materials and coordinate equipment procurement, staging, and testing.
- Conduct peer reviews and review engineering designs prepared by external service providers for technical compliance and constructability.
- Support equipment installation, commissioning, field reviews, and troubleshooting.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design work packages, including deliverables, resources, schedules, budgets, and progress reporting when assigned.
- Travel to project sites throughout British Columbia as required.
Qualifications
- University degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia or another Canadian province/territory.
- Valid Permit to Practice (P2P).
- 8+ years of Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering experience.
- Strong telecommunications engineering design experience within utility or similar infrastructure environments.
- Engineering design experience with IP/MPLS, DACS, SONET, microwave, site selection, antennas and towers, grounding, and other telecommunications technologies.
- Good understanding of project and task management processes.
- Proven ability to manage multiple assignments and competing deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Nice to Have
- Telecom engineering design or support experience for substations.
- Experience with 5G mobility, WiMAX, satellite communications, Power Line Carrier, Tetra/VHF/UHF radio, teleprotection, and -48 VDC systems.
- Previous experience acting as an Owner’s Engineer or Project Engineer.
- Experience managing engineering work packages, budgets, schedules, and multidisciplinary teams.
