Fisheries and Oceans Canada is the federal lead for safeguarding our waters and managing Canada's fisheries, oceans and freshwater resources. Within the Science branch of DFO, Physical Scientist usually work within one of two streams. The first involves computer programming or scripting languages for data processing and analysis as well as for data management. The second involves the monitoring, modelling and science data analysis of our oceans as well as our coastal and nearshore waters such as estuaries and bays.

EDUCATION :

  • Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE (for PC-02 and PC-03 positions) :

  • Experience using modern computer programming or scripting languages for data processing, analysis and management.
  • PC-03 POSITIONS ONLY :

  • Approximately one year work experience in one of the physical sciences or geomatics fields.
  • Experience in writing reports or publications.
  • The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

    Various language requirements

  • For Supervisory positions : Bilingual – Imperative or Non-Imperative (CBC / CBC).
  • An imperative appointment process means that a person must meet the language requirements at the time of appointment

    A non-imperative appointment means that the position can be staffed by a person who agrees to become bilingual through language training at government expense within the 2-year exemption period.

    APPLICATION / ASSESSMENT PROCESS

    Step 1 : Application

  • Candidates invited to an interview will be required to bring proof of their education credentials, in the form of a diploma or official transcript.     Step 6 : Appointment

    If the hiring manager has determined that you meet the requirements for the position, you will receive an official notification from Human Resources. Should you be selected for the position, the hiring manager will contact you directly. You will be required to meet any conditions of employment for the position, such as a valid security clearance which will be reflected in your employment letter of offer.

    APPLICATION EXPIRY PERIOD

    Applications to this selection process will expire every 150 days from date of submission. If your application is expired, you will not be referred to future vacancies.
