Job description

Job Title: Structural Welder

Job Description

This role involves structural welding in a shop environment, focusing on fitting and welding drilling products, fuel tanks, and other custom structural components using mild steel. You will weld the structural framework of drilling rigs, working with a mix of fitting and welding tasks that varies by shift, and will use oxy-fuel cutting torches while maintaining tight fit-up tolerances of approximately 1/8 inch.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural welding in a shop environment using mild steel for drilling products, fuel tanks, and one-off structural components.
  • Fit and weld the structural framework of drilling rigs, balancing fitting and welding duties (approximately 50/50 split on day shift and 20/80 split on night shift).
  • Use flux core and metal core welding processes in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Apply CWB FCAW flat-position welding techniques to produce high-quality welds.
  • Interpret drawings and layouts to fit, assemble, and weld skids, ladders, handrails, platforms, and other structural steel assemblies.
  • Use oxy-fuel cutting torches safely and accurately to cut and prepare materials.
  • Maintain fit-up tolerances at approximately 1/8 inch to ensure structural integrity and dimensional accuracy.
  • Perform general fabrication tasks including measuring, cutting, fitting, and assembling structural steel components.
  • Operate and work around overhead cranes to move and position materials and assemblies, following all safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with other trades workers and team members to meet production schedules and quality standards.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, maintain a clean work area, and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Support quality control practices by inspecting welds and structures and addressing any defects or nonconformances as required.

Why Work Here?

You will join a well-established organization that is a major player in the mobile oilfield space with operations around the globe, providing long-term stability with work already booked into 2025 and some departments into 2026. The facility offers a centralized location compared with many similar shops in the city, making commuting more convenient. You will receive a competitive rate of pay, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid medical and dental coverage. In addition, you can participate in stock options and a pension plan with a 5% wage match that is fully vested, supporting your long-term financial security. The combination of strong job security, robust benefits, and opportunities to grow with an expanding team creates a compelling environment for skilled trades professionals.

Work Environment

The role is based in a shop environment in southeast Calgary, with a team of approximately 30 trades workers and plans for significant expansion in 2026. The facility focuses on structural fabrication for the mobile oilfield sector, including drilling rigs and related equipment, using processes such as flux core, metal core, MIG, and TIG welding, along with oxy-fuel cutting and overhead crane operations. Day shift runs Monday to Friday from 6:30 . to 3:00 ., while afternoon shift runs Monday to Thursday from 2:30 . to 1:00 ., with a premium paid for afternoon work. Overtime is available after 10 hours in any day, regardless of total hours worked that week.
