Job description

MatchBox Consulting Group is currently seeking a Project Engineer for our client, a leading utility organization delivering critical energy infrastructure projects across British Columbia.
This role sits within the Line and Interconnections Project Engineering team and plays a key role in the delivery of complex infrastructure initiatives supporting the modernization and expansion of the provincial power system.
The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and external engineering partners to deliver technically complex projects across generation and transmission assets. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer who enjoys working on high-impact infrastructure projects with varied technical challenges and stakeholders.
While the role is based in Burnaby, BC, occasional travel to facilities across the province and other North American locations may be required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the engineering scope, schedule, and cost for large or technically complex infrastructure projects.
  • Provide Owner’s Engineer leadership when engineering work is completed by external consultants or equipment vendors, including coordinating internal technical reviews.
  • Work closely with project managers to ensure engineering deliverables align with overall project scope, budget, and timelines.
  • Identify and manage technical project risks, including integration with existing generation and transmission systems.
  • Establish and coordinate engineering teams in collaboration with functional managers.
  • Develop and implement design and engineering review strategies, schedules, and resource plans.
  • Coordinate the preparation of technical specifications, engineering drawings, and design documentation.
  • Manage engineering consultant contracts when required.
  • Provide technical support throughout manufacturing, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Ensure technical issues are addressed and resolved efficiently.
  • Prepare technical recommendations, reports, and presentations for senior leadership and executive stakeholders.
  • Mentor and coach engineers and project team members across the organization.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, or eligibility for immediate registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Minimum 8 years of progressive engineering experience, primarily focused on transmission substation design.
  • Experience working across the full project lifecycle, including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, and commissioning.
  • Strong understanding of generation systems and operational considerations for multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership, stakeholder coordination, and technical communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of project management principles and processes.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience leading Owner’s Engineer reviews of externally delivered engineering work.
  • Familiarity with utility project delivery processes and design practices.
  • Site experience on large infrastructure projects such as:
    • Hydroelectric generating stations
    • Dam infrastructure
    • Transmission substations
    • Transmission line projects

Additional Requirements
  • Maintain Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC) registration in good standing.
  • Maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • This is a safety-sensitive role requiring pre-employment alcohol and drug testing.

If you are an experienced engineer interested in contributing to major infrastructure projects that support the future of energy in British Columbia, we encourage you to apply.
Additional Information
  • Hybrid work schedule with three days per week in the Burnaby office
  • Occasional travel within British Columbia may be required to support telecom infrastructure projects
  • The role is classified as safety-sensitive, and pre-employment testing may be required as part of the hiring process
