WHAT IT TAKES
The Role:

The CMPT Student Assistant supports students in scheduled Computing Science lectures and labs by providing peer tutoring, and supporting instructors with in-class activities. This position is ideal for CMPT students who enjoy programming, problem solving, tutoring, and want to help other students build confidence in CMPT courses. While Student Assistants are not expected to know every answer immediately, they should be prepared to guide students through debugging and problem-solving steps, help them use lab tools effectively, and refer questions to the instructor as needed.

To be Successful in this Role You Will Need:


    • Be a current Douglas College student or eligible student from another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. who meets the Student Assistant eligibility requirements below.
    • Have completed at least one of CMPT 1105, CMPT 1109, or CMPT 1209 with a grade of B+ or higher. Completion of additional CMPT courses is an asset.
    • Have working knowledge of C++ and/or Python; knowledge of both is preferred.
    • Working knowledge of Unreal Engine is an asset.
    • Working knowledge of Raspberry Pi is an asset.
    • Be comfortable using Windows, file/folder management, modern web browsers, Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code.
    • Be able to explain technical ideas clearly and patiently to students with different levels of experience.
    • Be reliable, punctual, approachable, and able to work with minimal supervision during scheduled lab times.
    • Demonstrate professionalism, academic integrity, confidentiality, and respect for diverse student backgrounds.
    • Previous tutoring, mentoring, lab support, customer service, or teaching-related experience is an asset.
    • Be willing to ask the instructor or lab facilitator for clarification when a question is outside your knowledge.
    • Remain active and attentive during class and lab time by staying visible, positioning yourself where students can easily ask questions.
    • Support the flow of the lecture or lab by assisting students quietly and respectfully, without breaking the flow of the lecture, while staying aware of the instructor's current topic, class progress, and what is happening in the classroom.

Responsibilities:


    • Help students understand programming concepts and lab instructions without completing assignments for them.
    • Support students with debugging strategies, basic code reading, file management, and use of approved course tools.
    • Depending on the assigned course(s), provide peer support for some of the following tools: C++, Python, Visual Studio / Visual Studio Code / Rider, Unreal Engine, Raspberry Pi, Windows file management, Microsoft Edge or other modern browsers, and other CMPT lab software as required.
    • Encourage good coding practices, academic integrity, careful testing, and independent problem solving.
    • Communicate recurring technical or course-related issues to the instructor or CMPT lab facilitator.
    • Support basic lab setup, class flow, and other duties related to CMPT lab support.
    • Maintain a professional, respectful, inclusive, and patient approach when assisting students.

Domestic students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant/Student Research Assistant:

• The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term; OR
• The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term; OR
• The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term

International students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant/Student Research Assistant:

1. The international student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of 9 credits at Douglas College, throughout the Summer term; OR

2. The international student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of 3 credits in the Summer term, AND must have been enrolled in at least 9 credits for each of the preceding Fall and Winter terms; OR

3. The international student, if he/she is a new student to Douglas College as of the Winter term, must have been enrolled in full-time studies (a minimum of 9 credits for the Winter term) AND must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of 3 credits in the Summer term; OR

4. An international student, who is not a Douglas College student, but is an international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C., is eligible to work at Douglas College only if he/she has a valid Study Permit.

With the notation - "May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria." Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.

An original copy of a Social Insurance Number ( SIN ) and an original Study Permit are required by law before commencing work at Douglas College.

Qualified Douglas College students meeting the above criteria will be given first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.
Additional Information
The position is located at the New Westminster Campus. Hours of work: up to a maximum of 20 hours/week. The work terms for this position are:

1. Fall Semester 2026 - September 8, 2026 - December 19, 2026

2. Winter Semester 2027 - January 4, 2027 - April 23, 2027

3. Summer Semester 2027 - May 10, 2027 - August 21, 2027
