About the Opportunity

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Supply Chain & Category Lead to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers in evaluating the strategic importance of steel within its procurement portfolio.

This specialized six-month engagement will focus on developing a comprehensive steel category profile, examining internal steel spend, demand, supplier markets, pricing structures, supply chain risks, and long-term sourcing opportunities.

The successful candidate will bring extensive steel industry expertise, including manufacturing, supplier dynamics, market indices, and global supply chain considerations. Working closely with engineering, operations, capital projects, finance, and supply chain stakeholders, this individual will provide the analysis and recommendations needed to determine whether steel should become a dedicated strategic procurement category.

This is an opportunity for an experienced steel industry professional to influence long-term procurement strategy within a major infrastructure and utility environment.

Key Responsibilities

Steel Spend & Demand Analysis

• Gather and analyze internal steel spend, demand, specifications, and usage data across multiple business functions.

• Assess current and future steel requirements across generation, transmission, distribution, capital projects, and operations.

• Identify spending patterns, demand trends, and opportunities for improved sourcing efficiency.

Steel Market & Supplier Analysis

• Map the steel supply market, including major producers, manufacturers, distributors, fabricators, and suppliers.

• Evaluate steel pricing mechanisms, market indices, supplier capabilities, and industry competitiveness.

• Analyze supply chain dynamics, including geopolitical developments, global trade considerations, and market disruptions.

• Identify supply chain risks, sourcing opportunities, and commercial considerations.

• Assess potential supplier relationships and long-term procurement opportunities.

Category Strategy Development

• Develop a comprehensive steel category profile covering spend, demand, market conditions, supply risks, and strategic opportunities.

• Evaluate whether establishing a dedicated steel procurement category would provide measurable organizational value.

• Recommend potential category scope, sourcing approaches, strategic priorities, and resource requirements.

• Validate findings and recommendations through market research, supplier analysis, and stakeholder engagement.

Stakeholder Engagement & Executive Reporting

• Collaborate with stakeholders across Engineering, Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Capital Projects, Supply Chain, Operations, and Finance.

• Facilitate discussions to understand operational requirements, procurement challenges, and future steel demand.

• Prepare clear, concise, and visually compelling executive presentations, category profiles, and supporting strategic materials.

• Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership to support informed procurement decisions.

Required Qualifications

• Approximately 15–20 years of relevant industry experience, with extensive expertise in steel manufacturing, supply chains, sourcing, or procurement.

• Strong knowledge of the steel industry, including manufacturing processes, producers, distributors, fabricators, and supplier networks.

• Demonstrated understanding of steel pricing, market indices, supplier dynamics, and market competitiveness.

• Experience analyzing global steel markets, geopolitical influences, and supply chain challenges.

• Experience supporting procurement, sourcing, commercial, or contract strategy initiatives involving steel.

• Strong analytical and research capabilities, including market assessment, supplier evaluation, and commercial analysis.

• Proven ability to engage stakeholders across multiple business functions and organizational levels.

• Advanced ability to develop executive-level presentations, strategic reports, and visually compelling category profiles.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent.

Nice to Have

• Experience developing category management, sourcing, or procurement strategies for steel or related commodities.

• Experience conducting industry research, market analysis, and long-term supply chain assessments.

• Familiarity with utility, infrastructure, construction, engineering, or large-scale industrial procurement environments.

• Master's degree in Business Management, Operations, Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Additional education or certification in Project Management, Change Management, or Supply Chain Management.
