Salary range (but not limited to):

74,800 - 91,400

Annual bonus target, based on the base salary, with a potential payout of up to double the target (subject to personal and company performance):

7.5%

Salary for the candidate will be determined taking into consideration a number of factors including: experience, skills, qualifications, anticipated contribution to role, internal equity, etc. The salary range presented above is based on a 35-hour workweek and would represent a majority of different candidate profiles. However, we encourage candidates who may fall outside of this range to apply as well.

We’re looking for a Law Clerk – Insurance Defence, Accident Benefits and Tort.

As a Law Clerk, you will play an integral role in the Legal Claims Department working closely with a team to provide clerking support for Insurance Defence, Accident Benefits and Tort files. This exciting in-house role is based in our Toronto, Mississauga, London, or Ottawa office.

What you'll do here:

• Practice management

• Drafting pleadings and LAT forms

• Reviewing productions and providing counsel with a pre-discovery (or pre-hearing) list of further productions/documents/information to request from counsel

• All facets related to undertakings, include preparing the initial undertakings chart, corresponding with counsel to request undertakings, reviewing answers received to determine whether the undertaking is satisfied, drafting motion materials to compel answers to undertakings

• All aspects of arranging Independent Examinations, including retaining experts, and preparing briefs for experts

• Paperless briefing of files, for both Accident Benefits and Tort matters

• Summarizing documents, for both Accident Benefits and Tort matters

• Trial/Arbitration preparation

• Experience assisting in Professional Negligence, Error and Omissions, Director and Officer Liability, Employment and Human Rights, Property, Construction, Surety, Marine, Class Action, Subrogation or Abuse Claims is an added asset.

What you bring to the table:

• Excellent understanding of tort matters (including practice and procedures and the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure), Accident Benefits (including SABs, FSCO/LAT forms and procedure, and the Dispute Resolution Practice Code), the Rules of Small Claims Court, and Practice Directions of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice

• College diploma, university degree, or equivalent work experience in a related field.

• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in Insurance Defence Litigation, preferably as a Law Clerk

• Strong document management skills with the ability to learn and utilize Intact’s various software programs, including iManage, Citrix, ACL, Nuance and the Microsoft Office package of programs

• Ability to prioritize, organize and execute your tasks in a quality manner with a fast turnaround

• Excellent attention to detail and sound proofreading skills, ability to prioritize and organize
