Job description
The Vancouver Board of Education welcomes applications for: On-Call Education Assistant (School & Student Support A, SSA, EA) Hours: 6.5 hours per day $32.62 per hour + 20% in lieu of benefits, if not contributing to MPP $32.62 per hour + 14% in lieu of benefits, if contributing to MPP From September to June each year with some positions available during Summer School. For more information about our school district, visit . On-Call SSAs must be available to work 50% of the instructional days in any month. Applicants must be available to work throughout the district and may also be required to travel to two locations on the same day (eg. one school in the morning and another in the afternoon). Once hired, you can choose to remain on the on-call list or you can apply to the VSB’s internal postings which include full-time temporary contracts and continuing/permanent positions. All permanent positions include a comprehensive benefits package (including extended health, dental and municipal pension plan) after passing a probation period of 16 weeks. Duties may include, but are not limited to:Provides school & student support to assist school as assignedUnder the direction of a senior member of the team, implement individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom settingJointly evaluates and maintains records of student progress through communication log; discusses with team members any changes which may be made to an individual student's programCommunicates and engages with community agencies as requiredParticipates in a wide variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activitiesSupports students in community-based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outingsProvides support to students with respect to their social and emotional needsSupervises students, as required, and redirects and provides guidance as they occurAssists in preparing instructional aid materials (eg. visual aides); sets up and operates instructional aid equipmentPerform other work within the job band as assigned Qualifications: Completion of Grade 12 Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience Ability to independently lift and position students up to 35 pounds Ability to run after a student to avert them from dangerProvide personal care (including diaper changes, feeding etc.)Where applicable, must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Certificate and will be required to perform Occupational First Aid duties if assigned by the Principal. OFA attendants may, at the direction of Employee Services, be required to perform emergency coverage at other locationsMust possess or be willing to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT) Excellent communication skills in written and spoken EnglishThe following areas are an asset: Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team A clear understanding of the theory and principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis Completion of POPARD coursework Ability to speak a second language Your application MUST include: Cover letter Resume Reports/Evaluations: Recent EA graduates must include all Practicum Reports A copy of your Work Permit or PR Card (if you are not a Canadian Citizen) References-name, phone number and email address of direct supervisors Recent EA Graduates (5 in total): 3 Supervisors from your practicum(s) and 2 supervisors/managers from your last places of employment Experienced EAs (3 in total): Current Principal, Vice Principal and previous Administrator and/or your most recent employer ** We do not accept friends, family or colleagues as references** If applicants meet the following criteria they may be considered for a School & Student Support B (SSB) position, paid for 7 hours per day at a higher pay rate: Completion of 2 years Post Secondary in the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education. 2 years experience in the following areas: Directly working with children/youth who demonstrate a higher need for support in the areas of social-emotional learning, behaviour, learning disabilities, mental health, or complex trauma. Assessing and supporting the social, emotional, behavioural, mental health and/or learning needs of students. Implementing various behavior support and/or self-regulation programs and modifying intervention strategies for students with diverse needs. Working with students exhibiting challenging behaviours, FAS, conduct disorders and implementing various learning and behavior management strategies. Planning and effectively carrying out activities to promote student development. Itinerant Assignment: A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties. Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate.
