Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to oversee and lead a high-performing, payroll team. This role will be responsible for ensuring accurate and compliant end-to-end payroll processing across multiple provinces, while providing leadership, mentorship, and strategic direction to a small team.


This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who enjoys both people management and being actively involved in payroll operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a small team of Payroll Administrators
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment
  • Provide training and ongoing support to ensure continuous development
  • Oversee and review end-to-end payroll processing for a high-volume, multi-province, unionized environment
  • Approve payroll to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness
  • Act as a backup for full-cycle payroll when required
  • Lead all year-end payroll activities including reconciliations and reporting
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation, including union requirements
  • Support internal and external payroll audits
  • Prepare and analyze payroll reports for internal stakeholders
  • Leverage Excel to manage and interpret large data sets
  • Work closely with Finance and HR to ensure alignment on payroll processes and reporting
  • Communicate payroll policies, updates, and changes clearly across all levels of the organization
  • Participate in and lead payroll-related projects such as upgrades or M& A activities
  • Support the integration of newly acquired employees into the payroll system, ensuring accurate onboarding, data validation, and alignment with internal payroll processes and policies
  • Partner with HR and Finance during acquisitions to ensure a smooth transition, including payroll setup, compliance, and employee communication
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and efficiencies






Qualifications

  • PCP or PLP designation preferred
  • Minimum 2+ years of payroll management experience
  • Proven experience overseeing high-volume, multi-province payroll in a unionized environment
  • Experience leading and supporting a small, tenured payroll team
  • Experience with Payroll Software such as Dayforce, ADP WFN or UKG strongly preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills including: Pivot Tables, XLOOKUPs, Managing large data sets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong presentation skills
