Job Description – Technical Manager

Summary
Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Technical Manager is responsible for overseeing internal product development functions and managing the plant team of quality specialists. This role serves as the primary plant contact for sales staff and customers requiring process assistance, including support for new customers, new materials, and existing product enhancements. The Technical Manager provides technical problem resolution and troubleshooting to ensure efficient performance of products within customer facilities, including resolving product and equipment issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Interface with customers, sales staff, and R&D to determine product and project specifications, ensure viability, and follow through to full production.
- Manage relationships with internal and external customers to understand needs and requirements.
- Support product improvement projects, including new business development trials.
- Compile and submit annual data for SR&ED tax credits.
- Manage the Trial Log, track trials, attend customer trials, and collaborate with Supply Chain to ensure successful execution.
- Ensure best practices and customer requirements are clearly communicated and consistently followed.
- Drive quality and continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, customer complaints, late deliveries, and credits issued.
- Oversee overall quality activities supporting printing and converting production departments.
- Ensure data collection, analysis, and presentation (including SPC, Pareto charting, and process capability analysis) drive data-based decision making.
- Maintain food safety compliance through the selected certification program, GMP prerequisite programs, and HACCP.
- Ensure the integrity of the Quality System, including standard operating procedures, inspection protocols, test methods, records, and documentation.
- Manage department performance and communicate effectively with management at all levels.
- Resolve employee issues through problem resolution and inclusive discussions.
- Support and promote a healthy and safe work environment by adhering to workplace regulations, policies, and safety initiatives.
Qualifications & Competencies
Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical, scientific, or engineering discipline (e.g., graphic design, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering).5–10 years of relevant experience within the packaging or plastics industry.Strong knowledge of packaging manufacturing processes, machinery, and materials.Experience in project management and product qualification.Demonstrated leadership abilities and team management experience.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective business relationships.Strong problem-solving skills with sound judgment in planning and decision-making.Results-driven mindset.Additional Criteria
