Position Description
JOB TITLE: Maintenance Electrician
Organizational Relationships:
- GROUP: Smurfit Westrock
- DEPARTMENT: Maintenance
- IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR’S TITLE: Maintenance Manager
I. Basic Function
The Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing all electrical apparatus within the plant. Performs minor mechanical repairs and assists mechanics as needed. Supports and trains other electricians.
II. Scope of Position
Works under guidance of the Maintenance Electrician Lead Hand but reports directly to the Maintenance Manager. Requires full understanding of all machinery, troubleshooting techniques, problem solving, and communication skills.
III. Duties and Responsibilities
- Plant/Machinery Maintenance (35%)
- Ensure electrical equipment within the plant is regularly serviced and operating well.
- Operate necessary equipment/tools to perform the repairs.
- Read electrical and mechanical blueprints to aid in problem solving.
- Keep a log of repairs made to each of the presses.
- Improve acceptable electrical and electronic fixes to get equipment running properly.
- Troubleshooting (30%)
- Respond to machine operators’ requests for a work order by running the machine to determine electrical faults.
- Read and understand blueprints, specifications, and manufacturer’s manuals.
- Preventative Maintenance (20%)
- Regularly clean/check all electrical equipment to ensure satisfactory operation and safety.
- Participate in electrical inspections with Hydro Inspector twice a year.
- Test electrical equipment for safety.
- Leadership & Communication (5%)
- Provide guidance and on‑job training for other electricians.
- Aid operators in basic troubleshooting.
- Be available for emergency repairs off shift if necessary.
- Install New Electrical Systems (5%)
- Follow prints designed by engineers for large jobs on equipment.
- Make material lists, decide best format for installation and carry out installation according to Canadian Electrical Code for smaller jobs.
- Install electric and electronic wiring, conduit and other components as required.
- SQF/Food Safety (5%)
- All employees are empowered to understand and implement safety processes and notify supervisors if concerns arise.
Health and Safety
- Work in compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
- Use and wear all required protective devices/clothing.
- Report absenteeism or defects in equipment or protective devices.
- Report hazards or contraventions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Participate in WRK safety program.
- Have strong knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code.
Requirements
- Minimum grade 12 education – college education in electrical program preferred.
- 3–5 years experience in manufacturing environment.
- Electrician license/certificate and successful completion of apprenticeship program.
- Electronics and PLC experience.
- Complete understanding of CSA & Canadian Electrical Code, electrical standards and compliance.
- Read and understand blueprints, specifications, and manufacturer’s manuals.
- Experience and skill on all maintenance equipment an asset – Lathe, Welder, Milling Machine, Drill Presses, Cutting Tools.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong safety orientation – follows safety procedures (e.g., Lockout) 100% of the time.
- Lift truck license an asset.
