Role Overview :
Reporting to Out-Trip Head the Canoe Trippers is responsible for executing the exceptional out-tripping program that meets the Diabetes Canada National Camping and Ontario Camps Association Standards designed by the Out-trip Head. Canoe Trippers will work with the Out-Trip Head to ensure that all tripping equipment is properly maintained and in safe working order. The Canoe Trippers will be leading 3–6-day trips and ensuring that Leave No Trace principles are followed and taught on-trip and are responsible for the overall safety and experience of both campers and staff. The Canoe Tripper is responsible for providing guidance, support in cooking, campsite prep, and general wilderness out-trip operations for all their trips. All Skill Counsellors will be providing additional cabin support to our counselling team, as they will be living in camper cabins (where appropriate and possible). Skill counsellors will also be involved in participating and where appropriate, providing leadership to evening programs alongside the Program Head. Canoe Trippers, in collaboration with the Outdoor Living Skills (ODLS) skills counsellor, will also be responsible for delivering Huronda’s ODLS program, with a large focus on pre-trip lesson plans and preparations. Requires : National Life Saving (NLS) Certification, wilderness first aid, out-trip experience.
Contract Length : This role is a 3-month contract.
Vacancy : Hiring multiple candidates Salary : The weekly salary range starts at $435 / week. Diabetes Canada D-Camps will cover all related accommodations; including on-site stay, meals, and relevant training. Location : Huntsville – Camp Site (1252 South Waseosa Lake Road, Huntsville, Ontario). Employees are expected to be onsite to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the role. Accommodation will be provided. This role includes, but not limited to : Provide the required skills and expertise to operate a safe and effective Outdoor Living Skills (ODLS) program.
Set up, maintain, clean, inventory and organize the ODLS skills area and trip equipment.
Liase with the Out-Trip Head about supply needs and upkeep, program support, and trip route planning and development.
Maintaining active supervision and engagement with participants.
Ensure the safety of campers and staff.
Maintain a camper-focus with an emphasis on intentional programming.
Ensuring the facilitation of appropriate learning opportunities related to out-trip skills and participant engagement.
Assist in the development and lead in the execution of the Camp Huronda out-trip programming
Assit with the planning of trip routes including packing and preparing for overnight out-trips and providing leadership for staff and participants while on out-trip
Ensure clear understanding of all trip routes prior to departing
Facilitating Leadership Trips ranging from 3 day trips to 6 day trip Developing overnight lesson plans and maintaining an accurate inventory report Maintaining a clean and organized program area.
Provide the required skills and expertise to operate a safe and effective Outdoor Living Skills program. The ideal candidate possesses : 2+ years of experience Current National Life Saving (NLS) Certification (required).
Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) certification 1 year of coaching experience or certification
2 or more years of experience working with children and youth
Obtain Wilderness First Aid or willing and able to successfully acquire.
Experience surrounding multi-day trips.
Education or experience in outdoor recreation or similar fields.
Ability to work in a dynamic environment.
Strong active listening skills.
CPR ‘C’ or higher required.
