Reporter-Editor, Ottawa – Full-Time

Description of Role

The Canadian Press is looking for an economics reporter to join its esteemed group of multimedia journalists in our Ottawa bureau. The successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of how and why decisions are made by the Finance Department and the Bank of Canada and a dogged determination to uncover the impacts of those choices on Bay Street and for regular Canadians. Adept at following the money by both working the phones and poring over documents, this reporter will generate scoops and agenda-setting journalism while covering a combination of policy and politics. This reporter will also possess the strong writing and broadcast storytelling skills needed to explain fiscal, monetary and economic policy and why they matter with speed, accuracy and flair. Working closely with colleagues in the parliamentary bureau and the business reporting team, this reporter will join The Canadian Press in its shared goal of providing the public and our clients with the best political and economic coverage in the country.

Responsibilities :

  • Write, edit and gather multimedia content for CP’s various services (print, broadcast and video)
  • Deliver exclusive, enterprise and investigative material on a frequent and regular basis
  • Report breaking news using all platforms including audio, video and social media
  • Research and seek out key contacts in order to develop a strong pool of reliable sources in politics, the public service and industry
  • Cover the Bank of Canada, Statistics Canada and the Finance Department, including budgets, expenditure estimates, public accounts and related legislation, as well as economic releases such as jobs and inflation numbers.
  • Obtain documents through access-to-information requests and other methods
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, share sources and divide workload
  • Support other bureaus and the business department in covering federal politics and economic news
  • Distil large amounts of information to determine key and important information under time constraints
  • Occasional shift work required, including evenings and weekends
  • Occasional travel

Skills and Experience Required :

  • At least five years of solid experience in a real-time, digital newsroom with a background in business journalism
  • Excellent knowledge and demonstrated professional experience using different platforms, including broadcast, video and multimedia
  • Ability to work in an intense working environment with a high degree of public scrutiny
  • Ability to work under extreme deadline pressures
  • Solid understanding of budgets and financial statements
  • Ability to make contacts and develop relationships within senior levels of civil service, cabinet, political parties and industry
  • Ability to disseminate complex information to a general audience
  • Proven ability to write with flair
  • A track record for generating scoops
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Familiarity with access-to-information legislation and databases
  • Ability to edit and improve colleagues’ work on short notice
  • Self-starter who can take initiative and develop story ideas independently
  • Ability to travel on short notice on an infrequent basis
  • Skills and Experience Desired :

  • Verbal and written communication skills in French
  • Verbal and written communication skills in a language other than English or French
  • Strong background in political journalism
  • Experience covering elections and government budgets
