Job Summary :
The Clinical Extern Leader reports to the Manager and Interprofessional Practice Chief Nursing and collaborates with the Manager and Interprofessional Practice Chief of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Therapeutic Recreation.
They are responsible for the ongoing enhancement and oversight of the Clinical Extern Program, the Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) program for Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN), and the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Program (NGG);
and provide oversight student placements across multiple areas of the hospital. The Clinical Extern Leader will support clinical preceptors, mentors and program participants in their practice and integration into their units, in accordance with Nursing and Allied Health professional standards, by providing mentorship, support, team integration, extern coordination, and overall program implementation and evaluation at the point of care.
The successful candidate will take an active role by working closely with both students and externs to provide coaching, training, support, helping them define a strong career development plan, and serve as a role model for the extern.
The Clinical Extern Leader understands professional scope of practice standards and guidelines participating regulated health disciplines.
The Clinical Extern Leader will work collaboratively with interprofessional and leadership teams to develop, execute, facilitate and sustain scholarly clinical extern practice and exemplary patient care.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Support training and integration of Enhanced Externs at the organizational and unit level by demonstrating a good understanding of CNO, COTO and / or CPO College Professional Standards and scope of practice when working with Unregulated Healthcare Workers.
- Support Enhanced Externs and students’ scope of practice, integration and scheduling needs into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards, in collaboration with clinical teams and Operations and / or Interprofessional Practice Leadership as indicated.
- Working with clinical stakeholders to coordinate and provide ongoing support to the Enhanced Extern Program, including planning schedules, education, and integration of the Enhanced Externs.
- Collaborates and contributes to ongoing interdisciplinary orientation and onboarding needs of and not limited to; externs, students, and staff as indicated.
- Supporting the development, implementation, and maintenance of special projects within the Enhanced Extern Program, SPEP Programs, and Interprofessional Practice team.
- Collaborate with clinical leadership teams and point of care staff across the organization and other support services to ensure adherence to scheduling policies and models of care
- Serves as a liaison and fosters partnership between the MOH, clinical leaders, educational organizations and Extern / SPEP participants.
- Creates, adapts and delivers clinical orientation and learning resources in collaboration with professional practice, using various delivery methods in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
- Provide regular presence on the clinical units to support the ongoing education and development of the clinical externs, as well as tracking and documentation of skillset achievement.
- Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluation of programs including the creation of learning goals and objectives. Development of action plans and identification or any barriers to learning will also be an expectation.
- Encourages and models critical clinical inquiry that drives the development of clinical practice research and improves patient care.
- Collaborates and contributes to the improvement of patient safety and risk management issues including the development of improvement plans to optimize clinical outcomes based on best available evidence and efficient utilization of resources.
Qualifications include but are not limited to :
- Master’s level health discipline education or evidence of working towards is preferred
- Registration with appropriate Health Professions Regulatory College, required.
- Three (3) years recent related experience in geriatric complex continuing care and / or rehabilitation required
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in adult education / curriculum development and delivery
- Previous experience as a Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of front-line leadership experience
- Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Superior communication skills and ability to communicate effectively to direct and motivate team and others, maintaining a persuasive and credible presentation style at all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels
- Ability to distill complex information into clear, concise messages
- Ability to influence others and able to establish credibility with all levels of the organization, challenging the status quo and being a catalyst for positive change
- Demonstrate leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills
