Role Description
The Outreach Worker plays a vital role supporting women and their children who have experienced sexualized violence, violence in relationships, or childhood abuse. This position provides practical assistance, emotional support, advocacy, public education, and collaboration with community partners to ensure women have access to safety and resources. Daytime availability during the workweek is required to fulfill outreach responsibilities and engage with community partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct needs assessments, safety planning, provide information, referrals, and transportation assistance, including transportation to the nearest transition house when required.
- Offer emotional support for women in the community who have experienced violence, abuse, or threats, including current and former residents of a transition house.
- Facilitate women’s understanding of their experiences and the emotional and psychological impact of trauma while respecting their values, beliefs, culture, and choices.
- Develop and maintain relationships with related services (e.g., counselling programs, neighbouring transition houses and safe homes, social services, police, other outreach services, alcohol and drug services) to identify and address service needs.
- Assist women through referrals to appropriate services such as safe, affordable housing and other supports.
- Provide accompaniment and advocacy for medical emergencies, legal, or social services appointments.
- Develop and deliver culturally appropriate public education initiatives to raise awareness about the effects of violence against women, violence prevention, and available services.
- Maintain accurate records, monthly statistics, and communicate case outcomes.
- Respond to crises with sound judgment and develop strategies for resolution.
- Collaborate with internal staff and external agencies to support client transitions.
- Promote a safe and respectful work environment.
Qualifications
Diploma or certificate in a related field (e.g., counselling, community support).Minimum one year of recent experience in a transition house or women’s shelter in a crisis intervention role.Strong knowledge of local services and issues related to violence against women and children.Excellent communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and maintain confidentiality.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of violence against women and children, and ability to work from a feminist perspective.Understanding of issues surrounding domestic violence, including child protection concerns.Familiarity with relevant legislation, regulations, and acts, including the MCFD Act as it relates to violence, abuse, and neglect.Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to adapt language to diverse audiences.Patience, tact, resilience, and ability to remain calm under pressure.Ability to understand and respect diverse cultural needs of women and families.Capacity to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, colleagues, and community partners.Ability to work independently, set priorities, and meet tight deadlines.Commitment to confidentiality, ethical standards, and sound judgment when handling sensitive issues.Working Conditions
