Senior PHP & Web Server Performance Specialist

This permanent position is for our client in the higher education technology sector, primarily focused on performance, stability, and scalability of complex digital infrastructure. The role offers a mostly remote working arrangement, with only one in-office day required per month in the Montreal area. Candidates must be based in the Montréal region and available for on-call duty one week out of every five (rarely required but possible).

Working Conditions

  • Annual salary between $100.000 and $120.000.
  • Permanent position, 35 hours / week with flexible hours.
  • Mostly remote work, with one in-office day per month (or as needed).

  • Responsibilities :

  • Conduct in-depth analysis and optimization of Moodle architecture, PHP stack, and web server configurations to improve performance and scalability.
  • Collaborate with development teams to ensure custom Moodle features align with platform performance goals.
  • Manage and fine-tune PHP configurations, ensuring optimal resource use and responsiveness.
  • Work closely with IT operations to enhance infrastructure components, including web servers, databases, and caching layers.
  • Configure and monitor key performance metrics using tools like Datadog; generate reports with trends and performance insights.
  • Develop internal documentation, best practices, and training related to system performance and troubleshooting.
  • Provide hands-on support for system updates, patches, and performance-critical changes in production environments.
  • What you will need to succeed :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in web server and PHP administration, performance engineering, or application optimization.
  • Proven experience working in Linux environments, particularly Red Hat or CentOS, ideally with clustering setups.
  • Expertise in PHP configuration, optimization, and performance profiling.
  • Experience with Moodle performance tuning, scaling, and troubleshooting in production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale web applications and high-availability systems.
  • Familiarity with web server technologies such as Apache and Nginx, and their integration with Moodle.
  • Knowledge of MariaDB, particularly Galera Cluster, and Redis, including best practices for database and cache optimization.
  • Understanding of load balancing technologies, preferably F5, and their impact on system performance
  • Strong experience in configuring and using monitoring tools like Datadog.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills for diagnosing performance issues across multi-layered architectures.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage critical issues in live environments.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • English (spoken and written) is required.
  • French is considered a strong asset.
  • Availability for on-call duty one week out of every five is required.
