Job description

Job Overview

Reporting to the Estimating Manager, as the  Estimator-Lumber  you are responsible for creating the structural framework that support roofs, ceilings, and walls in buildings with a primarily focus on preparing models for estimating use. You may also work with light metal plate connected wood trusses for roof and floor applications, prefabricated wood I-joists and structural composite lumber (SCL) in an engineered wood products (EWP) design and manufacturing environment.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include :

  • Creating computer models using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Reviewing and interpreting customer-supplied documents, such as blueprints or drawings, to identify any areas that require clarifying.
  • Reviewing constructability of the projects and identifying opportunities for value engineering.
  • Occasionally meeting with clients to discuss project details and design specifications.
  • Maintaining model price lists and directing Designers and Sales Department on project pricing.
  • Promoting a safe work environment and ensuring compliance with Qualico’s Safety Program, policies and procedures.
  • Providing support to other projects or duties as assigned.

  • Essential Requirements

  • Post-secondary education or technical training courses in Engineering, Architecture or Drafting.
  • Knowledge of building codes, wood frame construction practices. construction methods, design principles, and building materials.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Satisfactory verification of criminal record check.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint and Excel), and drafting and industry design software (Mitek).
  • Preferred Requirements

  • Previous experience in the construction industry or as an Estimator for a home builder or trade partner experience can be valuable.
  • Previous drafting and design experience in the construction industry preferred.
  • Previous experience in lumber and building materials industry is a strong asset.

  • Work Conditions

    Primarily works in an office setting during regular business hours. Travel to sites and overtime may occasionally be required. After ninety days probation a flexible workplace policy will be available.
