Job Summary

This position is for the rapidly expanding I&T Product and Solution Management team (PSM), and centered on Intermodal (containerized shipment) business - Intermodal encompasses transportation by rail, truck, and ocean vessels.

To transport these goods with increased reliability, efficiency and safety, we are continuously deploying new and innovative technology solutions across our network : this includes constantly enhancing our applications' functionalities and improving their stability. As part of the team responsible for designing enhancements, developing and supporting in-house and 3rd party applications, which allows CN to efficiently manage its Intermodal operations, you'll be involved in many projects simultaneously in both Development and Core Support environments.

Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities

  • Interact with various business owners / users to understand requirements and expectations.
  • Gather and review business requirements for small projects / enhancements and ensure they are in line with existing processes and architectural direction.
  • Provide progress updates with regards to ongoing initiatives as needed.
  • Design
  • Analyze, design application enhancements that are in line with proposed solution.
  • Ensure optimal re-use and leveraging of existing technology components to avoid the development of new and / or customized functions.
  • Become a subject matter expert (SME) capable of defining business needs to our software developers or to our vendors to produce the proposed enhancements.
  • Coordinate development efforts and conduct functional testing with various internal and external resources.
  • Provide functional support of 3rd party applications that are used by CN as well as the internal components they rely on.
  • Apply, and ensure compliance with all appropriate CN I&T standards (i.e. code quality, security, architectural alignment, project delivery methodology, SOX, etc…)
  • Collaborate with internal testing teams and ensure proper test cases / scenarios are created.
  • Coordinate efforts to identify and resolve defects / issues to determine root cause.
  • Validate any test results with PSM and business users.
  • Prepare and execute implementation plans : this includes deployment, cutover and fallback.
  • Deploy and work with development teams to stabilize solutions.
  • Perform knowledge transfers within support team and / or business users.
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on various in-house and 3rd party applications.
  • Some travel to on-site locations throughout Canada and United States.

Requirements

Experience

  • Ability to translate customer needs into functional requirements and working with necessary resources to ensure technical implementation.
  • Experience in leading / coordinating small-to-medium scale technology enhancements from conception to implementation.
  • Experience in the implementation, integration, configuration support and management of in-house and 3rd party applications.
  • Experience drafting and performing functional test cases / scenarios, and exposure to test data.
  • Off-Hour support required (on rotation)
  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent education and / or experience.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office applications and tools.
  • Assets

  • Knowledge of railroad industry, intermodal operations is an asset.
  • Experience with CN's AGS-OASIS is an asset.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and independently.
  • Willing to experience new things and learn, learn, learn.
