Title: Intermediate Accountant

Compensation: $75,000 per year
Position Overview:
Our client, a non-profit organization in South Edmonton, is seeking a permanent Intermediate Accountant to join their growing team. Financial Reporting & General Accounting
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records in compliance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profits (ASNPO).
- Perform month-end and year-end closing procedures, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements, budget variance analysis, and cash flow forecasting.
- Support audit preparations and liaise with external auditors to ensure compliance with non-profit financial regulations. (RSM)
- Assist with year-end working papers and assist with uploading documents to RSM’s internal system
- Ensure proper allocation of expenses across departments and funding sources.
Grant & Program-Based Financial Management (Back-Up Function)
- Track restricted and unrestricted funding, ensuring all grant expenditures align with funding agreements.
- Prepare and submit grant reports and financial documentation for government agencies, donors, and funding partners.
- Collaborate with Mission Impact and Operations teams to monitor program financials and ensure financial sustainability of mission-driven initiatives.
- Ensure funding compliance and financial reporting for social programs, employment initiatives, and donation-based activities.
Donation Revenue & Retail Financial Oversight
- Monitor donation-based revenue models, ensuring financial tracking aligns with social enterprise objectives.
- Assist in revenue recognition, reconciliation, and cost allocations related to thrift store operations and mission programs.
- Ensure proper financial documentation for charitable donation tax receipt and revenue from in-kind donations.
- Work closely with store managers and operations teams to analyze financial performance and cost efficiency at the retail and donation center levels.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Assist in the preparation of operating budgets, capital budgets, and long-term financial forecasts.
- Analyze financial trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) such as Labour Hours per Donation (LH/D), donation sustainability, and mission program efficiency.
- Conduct cost-benefit analysis for mission initiatives, workforce development programs, and sustainability projects.
- Support decision-making through financial modeling and scenario analysis.
Compliance, Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with ASNPO, CRA guidelines for charitable organizations, and funding agreements.
- Maintain internal controls over financial transactions, payroll allocations, and expense reporting.
- Support compliance with government and donor reporting requirements for mission-driven activities.
- Monitor policy adherence for financial best practices in grant and fund accounting.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & System Optimization
- Partner with Operations, HR, and Mission Impact to streamline financial processes and improve budgetary alignment with program needs.
- Assist in the implementation and optimization of financial systems, including Power BI reporting, WESA, and donation tracking databases.
- Support finance-related training initiatives for operational teams, store managers, and program leads to enhance financial literacy and accountability.
Software:
- Sage Intacct, Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and financial reporting tools.
Must Have Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (required).
- 3+ years of experience in general accounting, financial reporting, or non-profit accounting.
- Prior experience in fund accounting, grants management, or financial oversight for mission-driven programs (preferred).
- Familiarity with donation-based revenue models, thrift store operations, and community impact funding (an asset).
Like To Have Qualifications:
- CPA designation or working towards CPA (preferred).
- Experience with WESA, donation tracking systems, or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is an asset.
