Job description

The Environmental Activities Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with the environmental policy, integrating sustainable development into operations, ensuring environmental compliance of the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) operations and tenants, managing numerous environmental projects, leading environmental studies, obtaining necessary authorizations for various growth plan projects, managing community relations related to port activities, and overseeing the environmental management system. The Director is responsible for monitoring environmental actions in the MPA’s strategic plan.

Environmental Management

Plan strategic directions, goals, and policies to be implemented in environmental matters.

Ensure compliance with the MPA’s environmental policy and the implementation of the environmental action plan.

Supervise the execution of various environmental projects.

Ensure compliance of MPA and tenant operations with applicable codes, laws, and regulations.

Maintain and update the environmental management system.

Set environmental goals and targets.

Negotiate and diligently obtain environmental permits from government authorities for various strategic growth plan projects.

Develop and implement corporate-wide compensation programs.

Review and negotiate the inclusion of environmental clauses in leases and ensure follow-up with tenants.

Oversee the completion of environmental assessments for projects.

Prepare and present environmental and sustainable development reports to the sustainability and safety committee of the Board of Directors.

Follow up on contentious environmental issues.

Develop and implement the MPA’s sustainable development plan and ensure accountability.

Drive continuous improvement within the department by optimizing business processes and finding solutions to meet the needs of the team and various stakeholders while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Internal and External Relations

Act as an environmental expert and advisor to other MPA departments and tenants.

Foster positive business relationships with MPA clients and suppliers.

Represent MPA on various boards and committees involving government authorities, environmental groups, the community, the maritime industry, and external environmental stakeholders.

Actively participate in the neighborhood committee.

Chair the MPA’s sustainability committee.

Department Management

Ensure coordination of environmental activities in alignment with the goals of the Vice Presidency, Commercial Development, and Operations.

Plan, prioritize, and coordinate activities in line with established objectives.

Monitor and control activities according to the established budget.

Engage employees as partners in achieving objectives.

Cultivate a positive work environment.

Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of employees at work.

Prioritize and evaluate employee performance.

Job Requirements

Education :

Bachelor's degree in Geological Engineering, Geology, Chemical Engineering, or another relevant field. A Master’s degree (M.Sc.A or M.Sc.) in these areas will be considered an asset.

Experience :

Minimum of 15 years of experience in the environmental field. Experience in project management, contract management, or similar fields is an asset.

10 years of experience in team management. Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.

Specific Requirements :

Extensive experience in environmental management and sustainable development in an industrial setting.

Recognized expertise in negotiating and obtaining environmental permits.

Good knowledge of the maritime environment (an asset).

Bilingualism in French and English.

Proven ability to provide leadership and clear directives regarding the development, implementation, and evolution of strategies, processes, and systems.

Strong work ethic, professionalism, and initiative.

Good judgment regarding issues and people.

Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and persuasion, necessary to interact with internal management and external stakeholders.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in French and English and the ability to represent the organization at external meetings and events.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with management at all levels.
