About the Nisga'a Nation

Located on BC's rugged northwest coast, 100-150 km north of Terrace, Nisga'a Lands are blessed with soaring mountains, dramatic lava beds, picturesque fjords, and thriving rivers and streams, complemented by our rich cultural traditions. For visitors and residents, there is a wide variety of activities to enjoy, including fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ATVing, and much more!

The Nisga'a Lisims Government (NLG) building opened its doors in 2000. It has since been responsible for a vital set of functions carried out under various departments including Child & Family Services, Finance, Programs & Services, Fisheries & Wildlife, Lands & Resources, Capital, Housing & Facilities Operations, and Enforcement & Emergency Services, all which contribute to the development of the surrounding area. NLG's directives are governed under Nisga’a laws as well as federal and provincial laws.

About You

To qualify, you will need a university degree in Education, Museum Studies, History, Visual Arts, or a related field, with 5+ years of experience in a museum, art gallery, or cultural centre. While ideally you will have 2+ years at the curator or director level, your enthusiasm, cultural sensitivity, and genuine interest in the museum’s purpose and the community it serves are of utmost importance.

Additionally, the following are required:

  • Ability to undergo a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check
  • A bankruptcy-free record within the past five years
  • Ability to live and work in-community while integrating culturally
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle

The following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Expertise in exhibition development, collections management, and artifact preservation, including rotation, insurance, and long-term loans
  • Experience in financial management, including budgeting, grant writing, securing external funding, and compliance with museum regulations
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, repatriation processes, Indigenous governance, and custodial agreements
  • Proficiency in marketing, outreach, digital engagement strategies, and fundraising initiatives
  • Strategic planning capabilities, including updating outdated plans and working with general council for long-term sustainability
  • Commitment to mentoring staff, succession planning, and fostering community engagement
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and other digital tools for museum operations

As our ideal candidate, you aren’t just a leader; you are a steward of culture, a strategist of preservation, and a builder of connections. With a deep respect for history and a strategic mindset, you guide museum operations with confidence, ensuring sustainability while embracing the evolving landscape of cultural preservation. Your adaptability allows you to mentor staff, engage the community, and strengthen the museum’s role as a bridge between past and present.

This is a pivotal role where you will safeguard Nisga’a heritage, build meaningful partnerships, and expand the museum’s influence beyond its local roots. Your success will be defined by your ability to immerse yourself in the community, embrace its traditions, and thrive in a remote yet vibrant setting. The impact you create will preserve stories, honor legacies, and shape the future of cultural understanding.

About the Benefits

The successful candidate will receive an attractive annual salary of $110,000, based on skills and experience. All NLG team members also receive access to a wide range of employee benefits, including:
