Software Engineer II – Cost Engineering Team

The Cost Engineering Team is looking for a Software Engineer II. The engineer is responsible for driving financial visibility, cost efficiency, and long-term economic sustainability across our cloud infrastructure. We blend engineering, data analysis, and financial insight to ensure that every technical decision upholds availability while preserving cost efficiency.
What You’ll Do
- With the support of your team’s tech lead and manager, break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery of your work.
- Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design & analytics, participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that properly consider risks and trade‑offs.
- Support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” & on‑call efforts.
- Contribute to a sense of community on your team by engaging in growth and development activities such as participation in the interview process.
What We Look For
1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer.Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems and proficiency in Python or Kotlin.Familiarity with the building blocks of distributed systems and technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.Experience building cost visibility via tagging.Experience creating cost savings opportunities via cost analysis.Ability to take a simple problem or business scenario into a solution that interacts with multiple software components, and execute by writing clear, well‑tested, and extensible code.Comfort navigating a large code base, debugging others’ code, and providing feedback to other engineers through code reviews.Proven ownership of growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders.Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.Education or equivalent experience; Bachelor’s degree in a related field.Pay Grade – L
Equity Grade – 5
Base pay range : $125,000 – $175,000 per year. Equally, elective equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech spending, and benefits including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents.
Affirm is a remote‑first company. The majority of roles are remote and you can work almost anywhere within the country of employment. This role may occasionally require you to work out of an assigned office.
