Job description

Introduction

The Survey Crew Chief performs advanced surveying related functions and is responsible for independent decisions related to surveyoperations, ensuring Department standards, specification, policies, procedures and sound construction and survey practices are followed.The incumbent is also tasked with providing direction to staff.

Conditions of Employment :

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence without restrictions.
  • Must be able to perform the work mainly in the field in both winter and summer. Must be physically capable of performing the required duties of the position such as prolonged sitting, medium lifting(carrying up to 25 lbs), walking (on possible uneven surfaces) and wearing Personal Protective Equipment in both outdoor and indoor conditions.
  • Must be able to travel within the province to worksites by ground, water or air transportation during day and night conditions.
  • Must be able to work extended hours including weekday evenings and weekends with overnight stays (possibly in a camp, hotel or motel environment).
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor rough terrain environment.

Qualifications : Essential :

  • Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or completion of Department Level 3 training courses.
  • Directly related experience in all aspects of survey (Preliminary, Construction, Bridge, Railway, Hydraulic Assessment, Culvert Replacement, and DTM).
  • Knowledge of current surveying policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health, Safety and Risk Management policies and procedures.
  • Effective leadership skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Effective analytical and decision making skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Duties : Reporting to the Highway Resource Manager some of the key responsibilities of the Survey Crew Chief includes;
  • Establishes and verifies secondary and horizontal and vertical control.

    Coordinates collection and ensures the accurate documentation of survey data.

    Conducts searches of relevant survey information (plans, profiles, benchmarks, etc.).

    Daily / Weekly consultation on project status and operations.

    Trains and mentors survey staff.
