Job description

Psychiatrist – Academic Medicine & Health Service Program (AMHSP)

University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Psychiatry (in partnership with Recovery Alberta).

Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Position Overview

Academic/tenured track Academic Medicine and Health Service Program (AMHSP) positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full professor. Positions integrate a clinical component with the AMHSP arrangement at Recovery Alberta, allowing a concurrent academic career with protected time for education and research.

About the University of Alberta and the Department of Psychiatry

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is part of the College of Health Sciences and is internationally recognized as one of Canada’s premier health‑education institutions, home to more than 38,000 students and over 15,000 faculty and staff. The Department of Psychiatry is a leading academic center that integrates basic science and clinical research, provides a robust residency training program in psychiatry, and has accredited subspecialty programs in Child & Adolescent, Forensic, and Geriatric Psychiatry. The department also offers pre‑clinical and clinical teaching for undergraduate MD students.

About Recovery Alberta and AMHSP

Recovery Alberta is the provincial agency delivering addiction and mental‑health services across Alberta. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team in the Edmonton Zone—including nursing, psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, social work, education, and speech‑language pathology—to provide education and assistance for more than 1.4 million people. AMHSP positions uniquely combine clinical work with academic responsibilities, offering competitively funded protected time for education and/or research.

Remuneration

Basical compensation is based on the Academic Medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). Total compensation ranges between $405,904 and $506,522 per year (2024 numbers). The exact amount reflects individual education, experience, and specialty.

Responsibilities

The clinical component may include any of the subspecialty areas—addictions, child‑adolescent, forensic, community, geriatric psychiatry—as well as collaborative development of services with primary care providers, especially targeting rural populations and Indigenous communities. Responsibilities include consultative, urgent, and emergency care outside large centres, direct patient care, and development of systems and team‑based delivery of care to reach communities and families beyond large centres.

The successful candidate will also actively participate in medical education and/or research. In addition to postgraduate residency training, the department commits to education as part of the MD program, providing pre‑clinical and clinical teaching for core and elective experiences for undergraduate MD students.

Qualifications

Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons as a Psychiatrist with subspecialty training and/or designation in child and adolescent psychiatry. Prior interest or additional training in medical education and/or research is an asset. Positions allow up to 0.5 FTE for medical education or research; the remaining FTE will be clinical services with Recovery Alberta.

Application Instructions

Interested applicants should apply online on doctorjobs and submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of three referees (one must be the current or most recent supervisor).

The cover letter should outline the applicant’s vision for an AMHSP position in the key pillars of clinical service, education, administration/leadership, and, if desired, research.

Please ensure that your credentials were assessed and that you have an eligibility letter from CPSA before applying.

Equal Opportunity & Inclusive Hiring

The University of Alberta acknowledges that it is located on Treaty 6 territory and respects the histories, languages, and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and all First Peoples of Canada. The university is committed to creating a university community where everyone feels valued and barriers to success are removed. We welcome applications from all qualified persons, encouraging women, First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons, members of visible minority groups, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

All applicants will be considered on the basis of qualifications and merit. If you require accommodations to participate in the interview process, please let us know at the time of booking your interview and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.
