Job Overview
The Assistant Director of Care works collaboratively with the Director of Care and the Executive Director to develop nursing philosophy, purpose statements, goals, policies, and procedures, and to describe nursing functions within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Director of Care and Executive Director to select, orient, and monitor departmental and program managers.
- Plan, direct, develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate resident care services.
- Align resident care services with the internal and external community needs.
- Oversee financial and human resource management of the Nursing Department.
- Maintain department compliance with legislative and professional standards.
- Maintain liaison with hospital, medical staff, community, and health care related disciplines to ensure effective care delivery.
- Hire, direct, supervise, evaluate, promote, or terminate care staff.
- Ensure quality care and a safe, effective, and efficient work environment.
- Ensure availability and maintenance of Nursing Department supplies and equipment in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Collaborate with the Director of Care on infection control issues and coordinate monitoring activities.
- Assume the Director of Care’s responsibilities in their absence.
- Promote the Resident Bill of Rights/Governing Principles and ensure resident satisfaction through continuous quality improvement.
- Work with trust, uphold ethics, morality, and integrity per Extendicare’s Code of Conduct.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year as a Registered Nurse in long‑term care.
- Minimum 3 years in a managerial or supervisory RN role.
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the applicable provincial licensing body.
- Bachelor or Master of Nursing preferred.
- Current CPR designation required.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, team-building, and time‑management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; second language proficiency considered an asset.
- Computer literate and able to maintain accurate electronic records.
- Must provide a current Vulnerable Sector Check (within six months) or be willing to obtain one.
