Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator, Applied Research Projects, the Applied Research Technologist I (ART I) participates on multiple concurrent projects undertaken by Camosun Innovates and performs activities in support of technical product development related to Applied Research projects.

The ART I performs core duties as well as the one or more of the specific technologist duties listed below. Some cross-over of duties may occur.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Provides product design support for assigned Applied Research projects undertaken with local companies;
  • Assists the Coordinator and ART II by providing input for determining the most cost- and time-effective processes for various tasks;
  • Operates, maintains, and / or calibrates, and / or repairs a wide range of equipment associated with area(s) of expertise, including, but not limited to CNC industrial equipment (five-axis machining centres, lathes, laser cutter, waterjet cutters, additive manufacturing, and robotic / automation equipment, etc);
  • SolidWorks; rapid prototyping equipment; CND equipment; and 3D scanning, modeling, and other software applications to reverse-engineer parts / environments as relevant to area of expertise;
  • Designs products associated with their area of expertise such as but not limited to manufacturing equipment, mechanical assemblies and parts, PCBs, computer software and hardware, data tools, high-voltage devices / applications, intuitive user interfaces, etc.
  • while considering the associated properties, methods and requirements of the desired components;
  • Participates in the maintenance of a clean and safe work environment (workshop and tools) and advises Coordinator on necessary repairs;
  • Identifies and sources parts from distributors for specific projects and communicates information to the Coordinator and ART IIs;
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality with materials and results of research activity.
  • Under the direction of the Coordinator, provides effective and efficient customer service to industry clients, and the department;
  • Liaises with local industry partners with regard to technical activities related to assigned projects as directed by the Coordinator or ART II;
  • Participates in presentations to clients and / or students as conducted by Coordinator;
  • Assists team on a variety client projects and process improvements by coordinating equipment and labour resources required machine utilization, time-on-task determination, uptime calculation, etc.)
  • Maintains currency in their technical field with respect to advancements in hardware, software, and local industry applications;
  • Ensures project, equipment, process, and work performance documentation is collected and maintained for assigned projects, and shares information with Coordinator for report / budget purposes;
  • Assists in identifying testing procedures and provides data on tests and assessment results.
  • Identifies and records areas for improvement to ensure efficient procedures and best practices are consistently implemented;
  • Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity

Working as part of a team, the ART II will perform one or more of the following areas of expertise :

Mechanical Engineering

  • Uses applicable shop tools to manufacture, repair and fabricate parts, including composites, using a variety of methods and tooling from a variety of material types;
  • Manufactures parts that may require multiple operations and setups.

Electronics and Computer Engineering

  • Diagnoses electronic faults in a variety of apparatus using standard debugging tools such as software debuggers and hardware such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers;
  • Analyses, documents, develops / programs, debugs and tests computer software and hardware including PLCs and discreet devices such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or ESP thus requiring expertise in ladder logic, Linux, Python, and C++;
  • Works with digital communication protocols including, ASCII command protocols, I2C, SPI, UART, RS-, and RS- communications;
  • Assembles, tests, troubleshoots, and commissions new electrical components.

Computer Science

  • Works with the ART II to plan the approach and development of interactive media;
  • Considers real-world use and implications of developed media hosting and available hardware;
  • Creates graphical assets images, 3D models, and textures.

Qualifications Diploma in a relevant field such as Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Interactive Media Developer, or Computer Science, and one years of related experience working in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment or a combination of equivalent education and experience.

Related experience includes a combination of current experience using SolidWorks, rapid prototyping equipment, 3D scanning & modeling software, CNC equipment, CAM software, programming languages, microprocessors, PLCs, networking hardware and software, troubleshooting software and hardware, modeling software, real-time engines, software for non-linear video editing and composting.

  • Proven effective written and verbal communication, including presentations to diverse audiences;
  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service;
  • A demonstrated aptitude for learning and operating similar equipment;
  • Self-starter with an ability to think creatively in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team;
  • Proven time management skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail;
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office suite and Teams;
  • Must be willing to obtain a Lift-Truck (Fork Lift) Operator certificate.
