Course description :

This graduate course takes students with a basic background in statistics and equips them to tackle

massive data sets in health. The focus will be on advanced statistical tests in machine learning and

assemble such tests by accessing and validating publicly available code in the R programming

language and creating their own code as needed. Students will also learn additional techniques

pertaining web scraping, working with unstructured data, data cleaning and data governance

building upon the course Data Science in Health I. The course will emphasise creative approaches

to analysing data and how to be critical of misleading analysis. Each class will involve both lecture

and weekly tutorial assignments. The major project for the course will involve a large health data set

that teams will compete to analyse.

Estimated course enrolment : 19

Estimated TA support : 40-50

Class Schedule : Specific dates to be determined in consultation with the MBiotech Program Office (NOTE : All courses at UofT Mississauga are expected to be delivered in-person in Fall 2024)

Sessional Dates of Appointment : September 3rd - December 31st, 2024

Salary : $17,267.74 (includes 4% vacation pay)

Minimum Qualifications : Experience required in teaching accredited courses at

a recognized university. A PhD in statistical methods / biostatistics, and / or mathematics. Advanced coding experience with R is essential.

Published research analyzing clinical trial data. Experience working in a hospital environment.

Preferred Qualifications : Same as minimum qualifications.

Description of Duties : All normal duties related to the design, teaching and delivery of a University credit course including : Selecting and inviting a series of speakers if deemed appropriate.

Coordinating student team projects. Meeting with each of the student teams to guide / advise them on their projects. Holding office hours as required.

Marking / evaluating; recording student attendance; recording and submitting grades; and communicating with students on course related matters.
