We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic to join our maintenance team in Red Lake, Ontario. This role is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide range of heavy equipment used in both surface and underground mining operations. The successful candidate will work on a rotational 14/14 schedule and must be committed to maintaining high standards of safety, productivity, and equipment reliability.
Key Responsibilities
General Duties
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on heavy mining equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system issues using diagnostic tools and schematics.
- Conduct scheduled maintenance in accordance with OEM and site maintenance programs.
- Complete accurate service reports, work orders, and equipment maintenance records.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Work effectively with operations, planners, and supervisors to minimize equipment downtime.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and service vehicles.
- Participate in pre-shift meetings, toolbox talks, and safety training programs.
- Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and all safe work practices.
Underground Mining Equipment Duties
The Heavy Duty Mechanic will be required to service and repair underground mobile equipment including but not limited to:
- Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) units and underground scoop trams
- Jumbo drills and bolting equipment
- Underground haul trucks
- Personnel carriers
- Shotcrete equipment
- Rock breakers and scalers
- Utility vehicles and light plants
- Pumps, compressors, and generators
- Ventilation equipment and auxiliary systems
Specific underground responsibilities include:
- Performing breakdown repairs in active underground work areas
- Completing inspections prior to equipment entering service
- Diagnosing issues in confined and remote environments
- Maintaining equipment used in harsh, wet, and abrasive conditions
- Assisting with equipment mobilization and demobilization underground
- Ensuring underground equipment meets site and regulatory standards
Surface Equipment Duties
The Heavy Duty Mechanic will also be responsible for maintaining surface equipment including:
- Excavators, dozers, and loaders
- Graders and haul trucks
- Cranes and telehandlers
- Fuel and lube trucks
- Light-duty vehicles and service trucks
- Portable generators and compressors
- Crushing and screening equipment
- Pumps, piping, and process-related equipment
Additional surface duties include:
- Welding and fabrication as required
- Tire changes and undercarriage repairs
- Hydraulic hose fabrication and replacement
- Structural repairs and component rebuilds
- Assisting with equipment commissioning and upgrades
Mechanical Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair:
- Diesel engines
- Hydraulic systems
- Electrical systems
- Drivetrains and transmissions
- Brake and steering systems
- Cooling and lubrication systems
- Rebuild components such as:
- Cylinders
- Differentials
- Pumps and motors
- Final drives
- Gearboxes
- Conduct fluid analysis and component inspections
- Calibrate and adjust equipment controls and systems
- Operate diagnostic software and OEM troubleshooting tools
Safety and Compliance
- Strict adherence to OHSA, mining regulations, and site safety standards
- Identify and report hazards and unsafe conditions
- Participate in risk assessments and job hazard analyses
- Use proper PPE at all times
- Follow confined space, working at heights, and hot work procedures
- Support site safety initiatives and continuous improvement programs
Qualifications
Required
- Interprovincial Red Seal – Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (421A) or equivalent
- Minimum 3–5 years experience in mining or heavy industrial environment
- Experience working on underground mining equipment
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
- Valid driver’s license with clean abstract
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts on a 14/14 rotation
- Ability to pass pre-employment medical and site clearances
Preferred
- Underground Common Core certification
- Experience with Sandvik, Epiroc, CAT, or Komatsu equipment
- Welding certification (CWB considered an asset)
- Hydraulic and electrical diagnostic training
- First Aid / CPR certification
