Quality Engineer – Irving Pulp and Paper

The Quality Engineer provides leadership and accountability for product and process quality within the Kraft Pulp Mill. This position plays a key role in supporting safe, reliable, and efficient operations by driving strong quality systems, disciplined execution, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Act as a quality leader within the mill, demonstrating ownership for quality performance and outcomes.
- Monitor, analyze, and communicate quality KPIs, daily quality performance, and off‑quality trends to support timely decision‑making.
- Proactively identify quality deviations, lead investigations, and drive corrective and preventive actions to closure.
- Ensure alignment of quality KPIs with operating priorities in collaboration with Superintendents and Production Engineers.
- Support and strengthen the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System in partnership with the ISO Coordinator.
- Monitor key QMS processes, including final inspection and test system, to ensure customer requirements are understood and met.
- Participate in internal audits and support preparation for external audits, ensuring compliance to QMSE.
- Ensure procedures, records, and quality documentation remain current, accurate, and practical for operations.
- Manage the customer complaint system, root‑cause analysis, and CAPA processes, ensuring issues are thoroughly investigated, resolved, and communicated.
- Provide technical quality support to customers, including reporting, follow‑up, and site visits when required.
- Ensure effective communication of quality and customer insights through leadership of weekly quality meetings.
- Collaborate with Logistics and Operations to support production scheduling and customer commitments.
- Lead and participate in formal problem‑solving using structured methodologies (5‑Why, Fishbone, FMEA, DMAIC).
- Use statistical analysis to identify variability, trends, and opportunities to improve process stability and product quality.
- Develop and improve SOPs, standard methods, and training materials to support consistent execution.
- Ensure quality laboratory systems are effective, including test method validation, calibration systems, and online quality measurement verification.
- Support or supervise laboratory operations as required, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
- Prepare clear quality dashboards, summaries, and technical reports to support leadership review and decision‑making.
- Promote strong quality values, accountability, and continuous learning across the mill.
- Contribute positively to a respectful, inclusive, and performance‑driven work environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (Chemical or Pulp & Paper preferred) or a related technical discipline.
- 2‑5 years of experience in manufacturing or process‑based industrial operations; pulp and paper experience is an asset.
- Experience working within an ISO 9001:2015 or similar Quality Management System strongly preferred.
- Strong foundation in quality engineering principles and disciplined problem solving.
- Ability to use data and statistical tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Minitab) to guide decisions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence without authority.
- Demonstrated initiative, organization, and the ability to prioritize and execute in a dynamic mill environment.
Location & Compensation
- Saint John, NB – On site
- Salary: $23.00 to $65.00 hour hourly
- Employment: Permanent, full time
- Starts as soon as possible
