POSITION SUMMARY :
Reporting to the General Manager of Missanabie Cree Business LP (MCBLP), the Facilities Manager will oversee the operation, maintenance and repair of the newly constructed Emergency Evacuation Shelter and ancillary facilities located on reserve in Missanabie, Ontario.
This includes managing an assistant / labourer, coordinating with contracted service providers, and ensuring the facility remains ready to receive guest on a year‑round basis. Catering and various camp services will generally be provided by a contracted service provider.
Construction of the Shelter is currently underway, with substantial completion targeted for April 1, 2026. It is expected that the Facilities Manager will participate in the final completion and commissioning of the facility and its component systems, including training on the various operating systems and infrastructure.
As such, it is imperative that the applicant be ready to commence work, including being available to be in attendance on the construction site, beginning in January 2026.
ABOUT THE FACILITY :
The Missanabie Cree First Nation Emergency Evacuation Shelter is a purpose-built, Indigenous led and owned facility designed to host up to 776 evacuees, principally from Northern Ontario First Nations, during natural disasters (fire, flood) and social emergencies.
Located in the semi remote community of Missanabie, Ontario (117km to Wawa, 131 km to Chapleau, 344 km from Sault Ste. Marie), the Shelter is one of the pillars of MCFN’s approach to delivering emergency services in a way that reflects Indigenous priorities and meets the practical needs of evacuees.
The Shelter will be owned by the Missanabie Cree First Nation, and operated by the Missanabie Cree Business LP, as part of its larger emergency management and services organization and related companies. The Shelter is contracted to Indigenous Services Canada and is on stand‑by and must be available to receive evacuees from First Nation communities during the “evacuation season”, typically April–September.
During these months, and always when the facility is hosting evacuees, the Facilities Manager will be expected to reside on‑site in Missanabie and work in tandem with catering, housekeeping, and emergency response teams, leading and managing all facilities‑related matters.
In the off‑season, the role focuses on preventive maintenance, winterization, and facility upkeep. Outside of the evacuation season, the facility will be available for various commercial and community events and activities; its communal facilities will be available to local residents on a year‑round basis for individual and community use (e.g. meetings, workshops, cultural events, etc.).

The Shelter is comprised of approximately 120,000 sq ft and is designed and will function as a fully self‑contained, multi‑use complex that supports both emergency response and a variety community programming on a year‑round basis; facilities include : Residential & Guest Services

- MCFN Community events and gatherings
- Temporary housing for various users (e.g. tourism, employees, construction workers, mining and forestry workers, etc.)
- Training sessions and workshops for emergency response personnel
- Cultural programming and wellness retreats This flexibility ensures the shelter remains active, well‑maintained, and ready for deployment at any time — while also serving the broader needs of the Missanabie Cree First Nation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Pre‑Occupancy (Jan–Mar 2025) :
Familiarize with facility systems and equipment during constructionDevelop inventory of tools, materials, and FF&E needsAssist in commissioning and readiness planningEstablish third‑party maintenance and service contractsCreate a preventive maintenance planOperational Duties :
Operate and maintain all interior and exterior facility components (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, recreation areas, cultural spaces, etc.), including both preventative maintenance and repairsWork with management to prepare an annual operating budgetWork with management to plan and execute all related procurementPlan and manage various construction projectsSupervise assistant / labourer and coordinate seasonal work schedulesManage part‑time seasonal employees as neededManage contracts for snow removal, landscaping, and specialized maintenanceEnsure safety, cleanliness, and functionality of all spaces including kitchen and dining hall, recreation and exercise facilities, meeting rooms, administrative offices, outdoor cultural and communal areasSeasonal & Emergency Readiness :
Be present and available on‑site during evacuations and coordinate core building services with emergency teams who will leadMonitor facility conditions during off‑season to prevent damage (e.g., frozen pipes, roof integrity, heating)Respond promptly to repair needs and maintain evacuation readinessSKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS :
Minimum 5 years’ experience in facilities management and building operationsStrong knowledge of building systems, preventive maintenance, and contractor coordinationValid driver’s license and access to personal vehicle (company vehicle may be provided)Ability and willingness to reside in Missanabie for extended periods while the facility is hosting evacuees at anytime between April and October annually, and generally as is required to ensure the consistent operation and maintenance of the facility.Ability to work independently and adapt to seasonal demandsExperience working with Indigenous communities or in remote settings is an assetStrong organizational and communication skillsELIGIBILITY :
