Job description

About Us

The Public Service Commission (PSC) is government’s human resources organization supporting departments and employees to deliver programs and services to Nova Scotians. We’re committed to helping build a collaborative and inclusive public service driven by the public service values: respect, integrity, diversity, accountability and the public good.

The PSC is responsible for government’s HR policies, programs, standards and procedures; and provides direction, advice and assistance to departments on how to apply them.

We’re focused on the current and future needs of the provincial workforce to meet the demands and expectations of a growing and changing province.

About Our Opportunity

If you are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of employees as well as being part of a team making strides towards addressing workplace mental health using an approach focused on preventing injury and illness and promoting diverse and healthy environments, come and join us. You would be part of a team of nine, reporting to the Director of the Office of Workplace Mental Health.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Provide supports and services focused on promoting positive mental health, preventing psychological harm, and supporting interventions for those experiencing mental distress.
  • Navigate individuals to appropriate resources.
  • Ensure confidentiality of information is maintained and that it is accurately entered into the Workplace Mental Health client relationship management system.
  • Develop and implement training, presentations, and resources.
  • Develop and foster positive relationships with provincial government employees, mental health and wellness service supports, and community organizations.
  • Design custom supports tailored to the needs of specific teams within government.
  • Promote workplace factors that support psychological health and safety in the workplace.

Qualifications and Experience

This could be the right job for you if you have the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Post-secondary education along with several years of related life experience in the field of mental health. Life experiences may include having been a user of mental health services; supporting a family member or friend; and/or as service provider.
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Experience partnering and building positive relationships.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver information, resources and supports that foster well-being and mental health in the workplace.
  • Awareness of the impacts of social determinants of health, trauma, oppression, inequities, and systemic barriers. And an understanding of the complexities facing those living with mental health challenges and/or mental illness; as well as available support and resources.
  • Demonstrated use of a solution-focused approach with the ability to initiate tasks with little supervision.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications such as Microsoft Office and email ( Outlook) and related business applications.
  • Strong community connections and resources in the community are an asset to this position to develop and strengthen partnerships.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
