YOUR ROLE

The Staff Nurse assesses, plans, provides andevaluates respite and palliative nursing care to children with life-threateningillnesses;

assists with teaching staff and children and families and supportsresearch in accordance with the BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice in B.

C.and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice philosophy, mission, vision and values.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Usinga framework for nursing practice, assess children and families needs; collectsand compiles data; identifies problems, develops, communicates, implements andevaluates care plans consistent with the interdisciplinary plan in a consistentmanner.
  • Evaluateseffectiveness of the care plan by observing and reporting symptoms andconditions of the child, consults with interdisciplinary care team, childrenand families to discuss revisions to the care plan which meet the changingneeds of the child.
  • Identifieschildren and family learning needs and incorporates teaching into the care planand nursing interventions. Explainspolicies, procedures and care plans to children, families and staff.
  • Consultswith the interdisciplinary team and other staff regarding children and familyneeds.
  • Maintainschildren’s records by noting observations and care provided; prepares reportsat shift end or as required.
  • Promoteschildren and families advocacy by ensuring children’s rights are understood andrespected.
  • Participatesin care conferences, family team meetings, and rounds and reports observations,problems and changes in children and families conditions.
  • Participatesin the development of policies, procedures and standards for clinical practice.
  • Providesinput into developing and / or revising policies, procedures and standardsrelated to the role / department.
  • Participatesin the on-going development and support of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Usesresources appropriately to ensure cost effective quality care.
  • Followspolicies, procedures and standards of excellence to ensure a safe environmentfor children and families, other staff and visitors.
  • Collectsdata for the workload measurements, nursing audits and incident reports.
  • Participatesin quality control activities / programs.
  • Participatesin orientation and ongoing education for a variety of staff and students byacting as a resource person, teacher and role model.
  • Participatesin committees and meetings which have an influence on clinical practice such asthe Practice Committee.
  • Participatesin educational activities in order to enhance knowledge and skills required forpractice.
  • Participatesin approved research projects and assisting in clinical trials.
  • Respondsto changes in practice that reflect research findings relevant to care.
  • Assumes other related responsibilities, asassigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate from a recognizednursing program at the baccalaureate level supplemented with two (2) yearsrecent pediatric and / or palliative care nursing experience or an equivalentcombination of education, experience and training.
  • Current registration with BritishColumbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Must have CPR-C & AEDcertification within the past year.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated clinical competence.
  • Knowledge of both pediatric and palliative care principles.
  • Good computer skills including MS Office (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Effective verbal and written English communication skills and the ability to interact with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability, availability and willingness to work various / rotating shifts including days, nights and weekends as required.
  • Demonstrated team player and ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct / train / orientate others.
  • Ability to effectively identify problems and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and devises.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, which includes lifting, transferring and moving children in a safe manner.

  • Evidenceof Health Canada approved vaccinations must be provided prior to your first dayof work.
  • Flexibilityis necessary, as this position may require occasional weekend and evening workand travel within and outside the Lower Mainland.
