Job description

Unit Summary

The McMaster University Medical Centre site of the Hamilton Health Sciences is home to McMaster Children’s Hospital. The Child and Youth Acute Health Care Program consists of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Inpatient Unit and the Pediatric Acute Ambulatory Clinics.

Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the General Pediatric service of McMaster Children’s Hospital will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric family centered care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible to : provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of community and tertiary care resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams. The NP reports to the Director, Child&Youth Acute Care, McMaster Children's Hospital, and the Chief of Nursing Practice.

Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday; Days. This position is temporary until December 2026.

Qualifications

Current Certificate of Registration in the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse Extended Class RN(EC) 2. Completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing, with an Advanceds Practice Nurse Certificate in Pediatrics, (NP-Pediatrics) 3. Minimum of 4-6 years recent pediatric or pediatric nursing experience 4. Minimum of 3 years recent acute / primary clinical experience in pediatrics 5. Proficiency in performing history and examination of the infant, toddler, child and adolescent 6. Knowledge and assessment of developmental milestones at all stages of pediatric development and ability to access appropriate community or hospital-based resources 7. Ability to triage and independently manage patients appropriately in the short-term in a busy clinic setting in the event the physicians are called away from clinic emergently 8. Experience and knowledge to recognize emergent clinical conditions calls and distinguish urgent from semi-urgent and non-urgent clinical matters and conditions 9. Ability to counsel and educate parents and children with respect to common pediatric ambulatory conditions10. Knowledge of community resources for pediatric ambulatory patients and their families11. Able to handle significant daily psychological and emotional stress in dealing with parents of critically or chronically ill children 12. Experience in the development and maintenance of medical directives 13. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, organization and prioritization 14. Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal 15. Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with the members of the multidisciplinary team16. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations 17. Knowledge and experience in change theory and pediatric learning principles 18. Demonstrated ability to utilize information technology 19. Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other professional organizations relevant to the role 20. Certification in PALS and relevant certificates recommended 21. Committed to acquire new knowledge and ensure competency 22. Eligible for cross appointment with McMaster University School of Nursing at the undergraduate and graduate level
