Position Description
Reporting to the Director, Engineering & VDC, the Senior Engineer will collaborate with their team and external stakeholders to meet deadlines. They will play a critical role in leading the design, development, and implementation of innovative timber structures and systems. The Senior Engineer has advanced knowledge of timber engineering principles, structural analysis, and material science to ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of projects. They work closely with architects, project managers, and construction teams to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions that meet client specifications and regulatory standards. In addition, they mentor junior engineers, oversee quality control processes, and contribute to research and development efforts to advance the field of mass timber construction. The Senior Engineer has strong problem-solving skills, leadership abilities, and a commitment to sustainable building practices. This position is based out of our head office in Vancouver, BC.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and supervise the refinement of structural schemes to optimise the utilisation of mass timber products efficiently. Support the technical design process for mass timber projects, leveraging the capabilities of our cutting-edge production facilities.
- Generate and / or supervise the intricate design of mass timber structures and their components. This includes meticulously addressing interface details and lateral load-resisting systems, aligning with applicable codes and design standards.
- Direct and / or prepare engineering deliverables such as comprehensive calculation and design packages for the mentioned components, employing both fundamental principles and advanced Finite Element Method (FEM) tools.
- Provide supervision and critical review of the mass timber fabrication model and associated shop drawings. Ensure structural compliance and constructability.
- Conduct a thorough check and approval of the in-house Mass Timber design, ensuring strict adherence to all relevant design standards and codes. Lead both internal and external teams design teams, capitalising on the strengths of our state-of-the-art mass timber production facilities.
- Collaborate with clients and developers during the schematic design phase, offering expertise in the development of efficient mass timber and hybrid structures. Advocate for the utilisation of mass timber products to enhance project sustainability.
- Effectively communicate and disseminate information within project teams, sharing best practices and design methodologies adopted in diverse markets to foster cross-functional knowledge exchange.
- Play a key role in estimating engineering work-hours for projects, actively monitoring and guiding the execution throughout the entire project delivery process.
- Serve as a point of contact for clients and internal teams, facilitating seamless communication and addressing any queries or concerns related to project progress, design, and deliverables.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum of 3 years experience as a Structural Engineer. Knowledge in mass timber is considered an asset.Bachelor or Master in Civil or Structural EngineeringVast experience in the use of US, CAN or European structural design codes / standards relevant to mass timber (NDS, CSA, Eurocodes)Proven proficiency with Dlubal RFEM, Woodworks Sizer and other specialist mass timber design toolsEffective written and verbal communication skillsResilience, ability and desire to potentially mentor, lead and grow the Engineering teamDemonstrable experience in the application of DfMA processes on Mass Timber Projects in the North American or European markets is considered an assetKnowledge of Revit, Cadwork or Rhinoceros is considered an assetMember of a Professional Engineers Association (PE, SE, P. Eng., Struct. Eng or other equivalent) is considered an assetSalary & Benefits
The salary for this position is CAD $85,000 - CAD $126,000. Salary will be commensurate with education and demonstrated experience.Our group benefits package, which has no waiting period, includes extended health and dental benefits, in addition to a Health Care Spending Account and a fitness allowance.RRSP - We provide a competitive RRSP contribution plan, with base contributions made by Mercer which can be supplemented with personal contributions matched by the company up to a certain %.
